Office Space - Whitehall, NYC

Whitehall Street and its surrounding neighborhood sit at the southern tip of Manhattan. The street is about four blocks long and extends from the southern end of Broadway to the southern end of FDR Drive. Whitehall’s history began with the building of the Governors’ house built by Peter Stuyvesant. Both the street and building were named “Whitehall” for England’s seat of government, Whitehall, London, when the British took over. The mansion is long gone but the area has a surprising number of attractions to visit. A military induction center was once located at 39 Whitehall before being bombed by Sam Melville in 1969. The Army building existed from 1884 to the end of the Vietnam War and saw close to 3 million Americans being inducted.

The Staten Island Ferry has an active terminal there called Whitehall Terminal. There are several museums in the area to visit they include the Frances Tavern Museum, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the Skyscraper Museum and the New York City Police Museum. One of the best features of this neighborhood is its location to Battery Park. The 25 acre public park boasts great views of the Statue of Liberty, as well as transportation to her, along with Castle Clinton and many sculptures and memorials. The Whitehall neighborhood is also the place to catch a ride on the New York Helicopter tours. Some local eateries include Flavors, Battery Gardens, Ancora Ristorante and of course not to far is the famous Delmonico’s.

Office Space - Bowery, NYC

It is locally called “the Bowery” and is a street and neighborhood in Manhattan. The Bowery neighborhood is bounded by East 4th Street and the East Village to the north, Canal Street and Chinatown to the south, Allen Street and the Lower East Side to the east and Little Italy to the west. The street runs from Chatham Square in the south to Cooper Square at 4th Street in the north where it turns into Third Avenue. The Bowery is considered the oldest thoroughfare on Manhattan, its roots dating back to the Lenapes who used it as a footpath. The Bowery has seen its highs and lows like so many other Manhattan neighborhoods. It was the home turf of one of America’s earliest street gangs, the Bowery Boys. From the 1940’s through the 1970’s the street was considered New York City’s Skid Row and was lined with flop houses.

Recent decades have brought about great change to the entire Lower East Side in the form of gentrification. The Bowery Historic District runs from Chatham Square to Astor Place. From Houston to Delancy Streets, the Bowery serves as New York’s hub for restaurant supply equipment and from Delancy to Grand for lamps. Famous landmarks include, The Bowery Savings Bank, the Amato Opera, the Bowery Ballroom, the Bowery Poetry Club and CBGB’s just to name a few. Some of the Bowery’s notable residents have included composer Bela Bartok, writer, William S. Burroughs, artists Mark Rothko and Tom Wesselman and the famous Punk singer, Joey Ramone. For some delicious restaurants try B Bar, Il Buco, Freemans, DBGB Kitchen and Bar and Peels to start.

Office Space - Wall Street, NYC

Since the street itself has become synonymous with the entire American financial industry, it’s easy to forget that the physical neighborhood of Wall Street still exists! But new visitors to New York might be surprised to find out its size; the street actually simply runs eight blocks from Broadway to South Street on the East River.

Despite the neighborhood’s small physical stature, however, it still hosts some impressive visuals, including the New York Stock Exchange building – hard to miss with its high columns and neo-classical architecture – and Federal Hall. Extending out to the East River, the South Street Seaport is also considered one of the hallmarks of the neighborhood.

Wall Street is also in close proximity to a number of hallmark New York icons such as Trinity Church and Battery Park. This has come along with a greater emphasis on residency in the past couple of decades as the area had been criticized for becoming “dead” at night. The street’s proximity to Battery Park City also has some people joining the two together mentally, if not physically.

The area also has the added cultural legacy of appearing in a number of books and movies, including –what else? – the 1987 film “Wall Street.”
