SUPER BOWL XLVI - ZACHARY BORST OF MERRICK, NY

MERRICK has been in the news a lot lately. We must be on a winning streak!

Merrick resident, Zachary Borst, 26, was picked as the winner of the Chevrolet Route 66 video submission contest which will air during the 46th Super Bowl. He wins the much sought after air spot and a $25,000 grand prize.

Borst's commercial was picked out of approximately 200 worldwide submissions because it contained all the important elements the company was looking for: light-heartedness and a commitment to the Chevrolet name.

It's called "Happy Grad" and it depicts a high school graduate who is ecstatic at finding a bright yellow Chevy Camaro parked outside of his house which he mistakenly believes is his graduation present from his parents. Actually, the car belongs to a neighbor who drives off with it by the end of the commercial. In the interim, the graduate (played by comedian Brett Sidell) is so besides himself with joy that he fails to see his real present which is a mini-fridge which has been thoughtlessly placed alongside this young man's dream car.

Borst is a recent graduate school graduate and much of the prize money will be used to pay off the student loans he's accumulated over the years. As a top priority, he also wants to compensate those who took the time to help him put his commercial together.

Let's hope Merrick's good fortune continues!

NATIONAL INTEL SCIENCE COMPETITION

NATIONAL INTEL SCIENCE COMPETITION

AS IF THE BELLMORE-MERRICK SCHOOL DISTRICT didn't already have enough to be proud of, yesterday they captured 5 of the 300 semifinalist slots in this prestigious, pre-college science contest that began in 1942.

They are in alphabetical order:

Asia Brown

Brett Gossett

Ross Iscowitz

Ross Shulman

Bilal Siddiqui

There were 61 students who placed from various Long Island schools and a total of 105 student researchers who came from all over New York State, making it #1 in the nation in total number of semifinalists followed by California, which had 41.

The Intel Science Competition, formerly known as the Westinghouse contest, is funded by a computer-chip company in California known as Intel Corp. Each semifinalist and his corresponding high school wins $1,000 and a chance to compete nationally for the top prize of $100,000. They are judged by a national jury of professional scientists.

Participants are encouraged to pursue and focus on original science research in the math, engineering or medical fields. Former entrants have made considerable and noteworthy contributions to these fields and have gone on to become recipients of 7 Nobel Prizes and other distinguished awards.

On January 25th, 40 finalists will be named and each will receive a prize of $7,500 if not named to the top ten. Mid-March, the top 10 national winners will be announced in Washington, D.C. in an expense-paid trip. They are vying for 1.25 million in awards.

One high-school student receiving and particularly deserving of extra attention is Samantha Garvey, 17, of Brentwood, Long Island. While dealing with unimaginable stress resulting from hard times that have befallen her family and left them with no home to call their own, she still managed to attend to her educational obligations and perform magnificently in this competition. With the maturity, persistence and single-mindedness that she displays in reaching her goals, she brings hope to anyone that has ever struggled.

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL INTEL SCIENCE COMPETITION SEMIFINALISTS!

Two limousines and a Humvee from the 1st 69th Infantry Division led the procession as we traveled from the Merrick Golf Course at 2550 Clubhouse Road to the gazebo at the Merrick LIRR to kindle a grand 12 foot menorah. Hot latkes, Coffee, Music, Dancing, Jelly Donuts, Chanukah treats and Dignitary Greetings were enjoyed by everyone present.

SANFORD H. CALHOUN HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT 2011 Winter Concert

SANFORD H. CALHOUN HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Winter Concert 2011

Calhoun H.S., one of Merrick's three, is famous for its award-winning music department. Several times a year, the students get to showcase their talent at various music festivals and other local neighborhood concerts.

This year's winter performance was held on Thursday, December 15, 2011 and I proudly attended to watch my daughter and her friends participate in this outstanding school event.

The show consisted of numbers from Chorale, Concert and Symphonic Bands, Show Choir "Crescendo," Jazz Band, Concert Choir, and Wind Ensemble. The performances are of a very high caliber. We have many gifted musicians at Calhoun.

One really fun annual tradition that I've never seen before at any other school is when Calhoun alumni are invited up on stage at the end of the winter concert to sing the final number "The Lord Bless You and Keep You."

Every year, I'm amazed at the enthusiasm and school spirit of these former graduates. They come, sometimes dragging their suitcases behind them (when they've flown home for college break and the timing is close), just to jump up on stage and take their place amongst the choir members who are holding up signs for soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

The Calhoun Music Dept. does a super job of organizing this event. It's always a terrific evening for all!
