About Oyster Bay's Mill Neck

Do you want to live in Mill Neck, NY? Here is the town profile of Mill Neck, NY 11765.

Rosalinda Morgan "The Rose Lady": Real Estate Agent in Brookville, NY

The Village of Mill Neck, NY 11765 is located on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of Oyster Bay. Mill Neck ranks #21 this year on the Forbes list of the most expensive zip codes in the United States. Mill Neck, NY is probably where most of the wealthy homeowners on the North Shore of Long Island are concentrated.

The claim that to live in Mill Neck, NY is to live in one of the most expensive addresses in the United States is half the truth. I live in Oyster Bay for almost 40 years now and know the town and the surrounding areas very well. Mill Neck, NY is right next to Oyster Bay and I have some friends who live in the Mill Neck, NY. Some are very wealthy and some are just plain ordinary folks.

Homes in Mill Neck, NY 11765 zip code are not all in the million dollar price range. The area that is called Mill Neck is a whole mix of areas. There are few streets very close to Oyster Bay which have a Mill Neck zip code and comparatively speaking have smaller houses on small property. Renville Ct. has a Mill Neck zip code but houses there are small on small lot. It is on the boundary of Oyster Bay and Mill Neck. Then there is the subdivision called Mill Neck Estate which also have smaller lots and close to Bayville Bridge but has mid-priced homes. The rest are all located in what I will call the Mill Neck proper which has big mansions on huge properties. These are the Mill Neck properties which get the big headline as the place with the most expensive homes in the United States - big mansions on huge properties.

Mill Neck, NY is a lovely community with rolling hills, big properties and a magnificent waterview overlooking Oyster Bay Harbor to the east, Mill Neck Bay to the north and Beaver Lake flows right in the middle toward the Mill Neck Bay. There is an ice skating rink near Beaver Lake. Shu Swamp Nature Preserve is nearby by Francis Pond. Francis Pond is a treasure for photographers. Part of Mill Neck borders the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park - a 400 acres state park. There is a horse farm in the area. The Village Hall is located on Frost Mill Rd. near the Mill Neck Manor.

The name "Mill Neck" originated from the mill Henry Townsend built in 1661 with a grant from his fellow freeholders. The old saw mill at Mill Neck produced cut lumber in planks as well as turnings for balusters, columns and fence posts until few years before it was demolished in 1890.

The Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf in Mill Neck, NY is located on a big property with an Elizabethan Manor House previously owned by the Dodge family and was imported from England and reassembled in Mill Neck brick by brick. It is the place where the annual Apple Festival is held every first weekend in October.

A solid oak doorway, reported to be between 400 and 500 years old, studded with iron details and unusual hardware, greets you upon entering. Another memorable feature of Mill Neck Manor is the leaded stained-glass windows depicting a series of five Shakespearean plays overlooking the main staircase. Many artifacts were brought in from European castles and palaces and installed in the Manor. Charles Leavitt, an outstanding local landscape architect, was retained by the Dodges in the mid 20s to design the exterior landscape to create a park-like setting. Cuttings from famous German linden trees were planted to frame the main drive. Leavitt also designed the formal sunken gardens at Mill Neck Manor complete with a pair of outstanding bronze gates designed in Paris, three limestone garden structures called Temples, and small water pools and rills.

The John P Humes Japanese Stroll Garden is also located in Mill Neck, NY. It is probably the best kept secret in town. Very few people know it is there. It is now open to the public. It used to be owned by John P. Humes, a former Ambassador to Japan and now the garden is under the auspices of the Nature Conservancy. The famous Cherry Blossom trees in Washington DC were stored at the John P. Humes Stroll Garden before they were planted in Washington, DC. Few trees remain in the premise. A tea house is a great place to stop after climbing up and down the steps amidst the serene settings. If you can lucky, you might be able to catch the tea ceremony in progress. There are few ponds with rocks and pebbles to resemble rivers and streams and beautiful greenery, bamboo grooves and tiny pagodas all around to admire.

There used to be a railroad station in Mill Neck, NY which catered to the wealthy residents of Mill Neck during the Gold Coast era. Long Island Railroad closed the Mill Neck train station just few years ago due to the fact that only one passenger takes the train from there. Nowadays, most residents either take the train from nearby stations in Oyster Bay, Locust Valley, Glen Head or Syosset which are so close by.

With the fall season in full force, driving around Mill Neck is a delight with all the colorful foliage around you. It is a reminder that you don't have to drive to Vermont to see the vibrant and majestic color of nature. It is right here in our own backyard.
