Watch Fire was originated by George Washington as a means to signal troops along the Hudson River that the Revolutionary War had ended. Additionally it is an historic extravaganza and commemoration of all who fought in the American wars for democracy. Piermont Pier, Ferry Road. Piermont is a village in Rockland County, New York, United States. Located on the southern tip of Rockland County, Piermont is in the Town of Orangetown. Piermont features some of the most stunning vistas in the Hudson Valley with a unique selection of shops, art galleries and restaurants that make the village one the region's hottest tourist destinations. Nestled between the Hudson River, Tallman State Park and the Clausland Mountains, Piermont is known as one of the most picturesque river towns in the Hudson Valley. The village can be found just off Route 9W, located just 11 miles north of the George Washington Bridge and three miles south of the Tappan Zee Bridge. Piermont is less than 25 miles away from all major New York City-area airports. Piermont's envious location on the Hudson has made the town a popular hotspot for bicyclists. An estimated 500 riders can pass through the town on a typical summer weekend in the village. Riders regularly enjoy trips to and from Manhattan and up to Bear Mountain. Piermont is part of the highly-acclaimed South Orangetown Central School District. In the June 2, 2003 issue of Newsweek magazine, Tappan Zee High School was ranked the 146th best high school in the nation. The ranking rank was determined on the number of AP tests taken divided by the number of 2002 graduating seniors.
