Kiersted HouseSaugerties NY Historic Kiersted House was built in 1727 and was the home of Dr. Kiersted who rendered services to participants of the revolutionary war.

This site is open from May to October on Saturdays and Sundays from 2-4PM.

When I visited recently I was speaking to a member of the Historical Society Board and he told me they actually developed a board game of Saugerties called Saugertopoly to celebrate Saugerties bicentennial this year, and as a fundraiser.  The game can be purchased at the Kiersted House and I have heard players have stayed up all night playing it.

Speechless Sunday-Take a bath and have lunch

Jennifer Fivelsdal Rhinebeck Real Estate (Serving Dutchess| Columbia|Ulster Ctys: Real Estate Agent in Rhinebeck, NY

I saw this scene yesterday and I just could not resist. The outdoor dining set right next to the bath tub; yes take a quick bath and then have lunch. On second thought, that is not a great idea since it is outdoors :)

So what do you find interesting about this photo?

Saugerties Art Studio Tour still time to catch it

Jennifer Fivelsdal Rhinebeck Real Estate (Serving Dutchess| Columbia|Ulster Ctys: Real Estate Agent in Rhinebeck, NY

The Saugerties Art Studio Tour started today August 13th and I had the opportunity to drop in on a few of the artists.

I first stopped by the studio of Michael Nelson, a photogragher who worked with film for over 30 years and is now embracing digital photography. I found his work interesting and had the opportunity to see a field camera, one similar to those used by artists like Fredrick Church of the Hudson River School of painting.

Stopping by the studio of Susan Sammis was a real treat, I liked her work with items found naturally, for example fallen leaves. I especially enjoyed the tour of her workspace and the examples shown to me. Technology does help to cut down on the time in completing a project. Upstairs was the studio of Howard Goldson, Susan's husband. I found the painting of strips he did intriguing, you could adjust the size of the painting by removing strips.

I also had the opportunity to stop in and see Isaac Abrams and Yvette Lewis. I had a great conversation with Yvette related to a painting on her easel; that of teapots and I happen to be a tea drinker.

It was a very pleasant way to sepnd an afternoon. So if you are thinking of taking the tour tomorrow keep in mind these studios are spread out,so if you have a GPS bring it along.

Here were my take aways:

  • when taking photos it is not so much about the camera but about good natural lighting.
  • For an artist's studio space good natural lighting and high ceilings are a must.
  • Artists really love what they do.

Thanks for opening up your studios and in some cases your homes to share your art.

Tommorow the tour starts at 10:00 AM and run until 6:00PM.

You can pick up a map almost anywhere in the Village of Saugerties.

The Village of Saugerties: North of the City of Kingston where the Esopus Creek empties into the majestic Hudson River in Ulster County, you’ll find the quaint Village of Saugerties with its Turn-of-the-Century storefronts lining the sidewalks. Saugerties has become a busy village filled with antique stores and owner-run shops, (a favorite is Montano’s Shoe Store), but, there’s more to Saugerties than its quaint shops and restaurants. Saugerties is filled with action in the summer when the Horse Shows in the Sun, aka HITS, starts its spring-summer season. Bed and Breakfasts are filled, accommodating riders and their families who compete in the many jumping events scheduled. Watching a competition is a great way to spend a summer day – the complex is impressive yet down to earth. Aside from the excitement that HITS brings to Saugerties, the village provides great parks and outdoor activities such as the Cantine Memorial Complex with its 4 tennis courts, 11 ball fields, 3 basket ball courts, playgrounds, horseshoe & shuffleboard courts, pavilions and BBQ areas. Saugerties Beach provides swimming in the Esopus Creek complete with sandy beach and the Esopus Creek Nature Preserve is a way to slow down and get in touch with nature on its 161 acres with hiking trails, one mile of shoreline and environmental nature walks held throughout the year. But Saugerties doesn’t stop there, other fun activities include: the Giant Flea Market, Saugerties Skate Park, Bike Paths, the Lazy Swan Golf & Country Club, Puttin’ Plus Miniature Golf and there’s North River Cruises for private sight-seeing tours on the Hudson River or visit Sloop Clearwater while docked at Lynch’s Marina each winter.
