Well here I am still enjoying a day that has been spectacularly successful. I wish I could say I picked up a new listing or sold one. Neither of those things occurred today but that was not the success I looked to measure today. Today was the day when the unnoticed details of a successful day of a successful life took center stage.
Today was the day that started with brilliant sun and searing heat and finished with crashing thunder and refreshing rains. and now trains, their whistles sounding each crossing, pass through Sayville getting ready for the morning rush. Today was the day that started with me writing about what would make this day a success... each moment with my family tender and special, each meal delicious, each song I heard raced my mind back and forth over the years of my life with inspiration and memories, motivation and passion.
I hardly want the day to end. But now I know how important it is to refresh my mind and body with the excitment of another day filled with success and surprises. I can't wait for the sun to rise!

I just woke up and decided to make today a success!
There is nothing particularly special about today except the weather is expected to be hot here in Sayville. I have been successful throughout my career and certainly personally with my wife and daughter, family and friends.
So what is it about today and waking up this morning... Tired of the same old thing, same routine that produces results each week and every month, Executing a plan that you put in place to obtain the goals you want. Getting to the gym early so you get your favorite bike at spin class. Into the office first to review expired listings and send out letters, make those calls...
Don't get me wrong I love my career and the work that I do as a Realtor, I am very happy in my life personally and professionally. Maybe I am just having a stop and smell the roses moment, but I think it is more than that. So much in daily life is focused on the big picture, sales goals, retirement goals, vacation plans, college plans... but for me today is focused on today.
I hear the birds outside my window, my wife and daughter both still sleeping, my dog sleeping on the floor beside my desk as I write. I am going to hoe the weeds from my garden in just a few minutes then water the plants. I am going to eat breakfast, eggs and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice. I am going to kiss my family as they wake, tell them I love them and will see them later. I am going enjoy my drive to the office despite high gas prices and traffic... I love to drive. I am going to help my clients with the very difficult decisions they must understand and make regarding the price at which their house will sell. I am going to listen to music as often as I can today. I am going to smile often today and this just the beginning...
I am going to make today a success!

Last night I was in the checkout line of my local super market. I only had a few items and needed to decide between self serve and full service checkout. Two of the self check counters were open and being used by a customer each. The one checkout counter with a cashier had two customers in line, each with small orders. I have used those self check scanners in the past and find them easy to use, however, often, I find myself stuck behind a customer who is not quite sure where to insert the cash for their purchase or how to scan their coupons.
So I got in line at the counter served by a cashier. While in line several things became very clear to me. First, as usual, I saw that the customers checking themselves out were having trouble scanning their purchase. Repeatedly they tried to line up the bar-code with the laser only to be denied with that awkward silence of no code being read. I could see their frustration building and annoyance on their faces. The machine's screen blinked and requested the next item to be scanned.
Next I noticed that the line I was in was moving along rather quickly. The cashier deftly scanned and bagged at the same time. Talk about efficiency.
Perhaps most importantly she was friendly, personable, answered some questions about a sale in the store and knew what broccoli rabe looked like. She was a real pro!
She knew another customer walking in by name and said hello. Not just as cursory greeting but sincere and authentic. Meanwhile the self serve machine beeped as it rejected the customers wrinkled twenty.
As my turn came up, I saw that the self serve customers were still cursing at the machine while the cashier I was waiting for had already served two customers and was now ready for me. I knew she must have been working for hours, yet, she was still pleasant and friendly. As she began to ring up my order a neighbor of mine, who I had not had a chance to speak to since winter finally broke, got in line behind me. Since I had a professional taking care of my order I could enjoy a few moments to quickly catch up with my friend and enjoy a warm hello. When the cashier totaled my order she also let me know she had a coupon for one of my items that she used and saved me a buck-fifty.
Lessons learned :
Always work with a professional
Convenience is not always cheaper or faster and more often far from better.
Full service does not cost more than half service or do it yourself no service.
Machines don't buy houses, sell houses or give referrals.
Saying hello and thank you to people you encounter throughout the day is priceless.
