THIS TIME NO ONE WAS KILLED!

Debra Walsh Orange Cty NY Real Estate 845.355.8439: Real Estate Agent in Middletown, NY

I had a really nice phone call today. But first let me explain what prompted it.

Last week on my way home after a listing appointment I was riding behind several motorcyclists. As we came up the road we were on, they crested the hill ahead of me and disappeared over the top. One second later a car coming the other way flagged me as she went by so I stopped and backed up to her thinking she was in some sort of trouble. I saw she had a baby in the car and was instantly concerned. She said the men that were in front of me had just been struck by a vehicle and someone needed to call 911. I immediately called 911 and headed for the top of the hill in the direction I had already been headed. As I came over the top I could see the motorcycles laying in the road, the men and two different vehicles that might have been the accident causer. I told all this to 911, hung up and hopped out. (Of course I leave my hazard lights on etc..) Now, picture this, it is very hot out so I am leaving my air conditioning and I am in my work clothes so I was in a dress.

MOTORCYCLE

I run right in to the middle of where the bikes went down to see who is hurt the worst and to make sure they stay down in case there are life threatening injuries. As I am running towards it, the one rider gets up as does the other (THANK GOD!) so it is obvious right away who is hurt worse. The others (their friends seem to have escaped injury) are trying to lift the damaged motorcycles to move them from the road. I make the one who is hurt worse lean against the car that struck him since he refuses to sit down because he is so distressed about his motorcycle. He is bleeding from his hands, and has possibly a broken shoulder or shoulder injury and head injury. His friend is bleeding from his hands also (both gentleman from scrapes from the road). He also seems to have hurt his back a little in the fall. It took the police and ambulance 15 minutes or so to get there. It felt like forever! So during that time I just did the best I could. Tried to help with everyone calling their wives, giving directions etc...as it turned out these were all firefighters from Staten Island just on a ride for the day. At one point the person who had hit the motorcyclists was going to move the car which I wouldn't allow because I knew that was crucial for the police report.

So for anyone wondering, I was in the medical field for 17 years before Real Estate and stuff like this doesn't scare me at all. The tow truck finally showed up to tow the bikes that had been hit because they were totally not drivable. The injured left in the ambulance and I left my number with the rest in case they needed somewhere to wait (it was right near my house) because it would be at least two hours before any of their loved ones could get there from the city and I headed home.

So back to the phone call. I received a call from them today thanking me for being an "angel." The one motorcycle was totaled, the 2nd will be repaired. The first who was quite injured is not too bad. No broken bones and nothing serious as was his friend. I can only thank god for the good outcome in this circumstance because I have seen far worse in the past. What could have been a terrible tragedy has turned out remarkably well and I am glad I was able to help!

TOP WAYS TO REPEL MOSQUITOES - BEFORE THEY GET YOU!

Debra Walsh Orange Cty NY Real Estate 845.355.8439: Real Estate Agent in Middletown, NY

1. AVON Skin So Soft Bath Oil rubbed on all exposed skin.mosquito

2. BOUNCE dryer sheets can be rubbed on all exposed skin.

3. TEA TREE OIL can be rubbed on all exposed skin.

4. VICKS VAPOR RUB can be rubbed on all exposed skin.

5. Eat more garlic or use garlic juice to rub on all exposed skin. (or garlic pills)

6. Remove any standing water.

7. Grow plants like marigolds, lemon grass, rosemary or horse mint around your patio or outside party areas. They are not liked by mosquitoes and you can crush their leaves and rub them on your skin for protection from mosquitoes.
8. Next time you are cooking outside throw these leaves on the barbecue and that will also repel mosquitoes.

9. Put up a bat house in your yard. Bats eat over 500 mosquitoes an hour which should help your mosquito problem.

10. Always wear light clothing, they are not attracted to the lighter colors.

11. Keep the air moving. Keep a ceiling or floor fan on if possible. They don't like moving air.

12. Use citronella candles.

13. Stay totally unscented. No perfumes, hair sprays or scented soaps.

14. Buy goldfish or guppies for any ponds - they will eat the mosquitoes.

15. And last but not least keep your property neatly groomed. Mosquitoes love uncut grass and weeds!

Should you get a mosquito bite and have that nagging itch:

1. Put clear nail polish right over the bite - the bite can't breathe and the itch should stop.

2. Rub a dry bar of soap right over the bite.

3. Use an ice cube or an ice pack right over the bite.

A SURPRISE IN THE ROAD!

Debra Walsh Orange Cty NY Real Estate 845.355.8439: Real Estate Agent in Middletown, NY

I was running home at lunchtime yesterday and there in the road was what I thought was some garbage that had fallen off the back of a truck. As I came right up on it I was in for a big surprise as you can see. I pulled around it, grabbed my camera, and then my neighbor and I CAREFULLY helped it off the road to safety after I snapped some pictures. Enjoy!! What a scary looking snapper he is-especially with those claws!
