"Incredible Journey: The Story of West Hampton Dunes" DVD
Anyone who is planning on buying in the Incorporated Village of West Hampton Dunes must go out and rent or buy this fantastic documentary by Yale Nelson. This film traces the detailed history of the Atlantic Ocean barrier beach front community from the time when it was a sleepy haven of beach cottages lining Dune Road in the early 1960s until today. Man made erosion protection plans that were poorly thought out by local engineers and politicians were implemented that led to absolute turmoil during the Perfect Storm era of the late 80s & 90s that simply devasted the community into abandonement, total isolation and distress. During this period several hundred residential loses were noted, homes simply fell into the fierce surf below their foundations leaving the majority of the remaining homes in the area basically worthless. The story continues as a hearty group of homeowners sought to get their beloved community back by banding together and succeeding from the greater governing community by creating the Incorporated Village of West Hampton Dunes in 1993. Led by Major Gary Vegliante, homeowners insited the assistance of local coastal geological experts to resurrect the community anew with information that resulted in battles, law suits and finally joint forces with several levels of government administrations to achieve their goal which eventually became known as the "U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Beach and Dune Rebuilding Project." This is the only federally funded on-going beach restoration project in the United States. By the end of the 1990s the project and its associated terms of perpetual care turned this once devasted barrier beach community into a resilient enclave of multi-million dollar waterfront homes which are much sought after when they are made available for sale. The documentary emphasises the benefits of the tax-funded beach resoration project and the strong will of a community when they band together for a common cause. Be sure to view this incredible journey of transformation from washed out beach community to glistening diamonds on the ocean!
