4H in Johnstown,Ohio ~ A great organization for kids!
Wow I just got back from my son's 4H meeting and O how funny children can be. You're talking about maybe 40 or 50 kids from 5 to 17 so there is a large age group and different in every sense of the word. They were talking about different positions in office from President to who‘s in charge of the game next time. There is a lot of structure in 4H and there are a lot of learning and growing for young minds. Kids learn how to use Roberts Rules to run a meeting, the value of leadership, a sense of responsibility, the value of friendships and the necessity of structure and order.
Let's get real kids can't be quiet and still that long and since this is also about having a good time there has to be free time to blow of all that access energy.Take 40 -50 kids put them in a gymnasium and add 10 or 12 balls. I'm sure you can imagine the chaos that follows. I don't know who was in more danger the children or the adults with balls flying in every direction and kids running here and there. I know I had a couple of close calls where I think they mistaken my face as a dodge ball target can you say chin music.
I look around and having known a lot of these children since they were in diapers I think where did the time go it seemed like yesterday these kids were drinking from a bottle now they're kicking balls past my face at an alarming rate of speed. The good old days or so you think but I'll take my chances with a ball or two over a stinky diaper any day. As different as kids are so are the 4H projects they choose from gardening and pigs, to guns and dogs, and health and science.
If you have not spent a couple hours with a group of kids lately, you need to brave the chaos and dive in, it really is enjoyable and time that our children cherish. These are the future leaders of this country and if we fail to invest in their lives they will not be able to take control in the future. Take the time, take the challenge, and get out of your comfort zone and be a kid you just might enjoy it and you can possibly make the difference in a childs life.
