Wright Patterson Air Force Base marks F 117A Retirement

Yesterday marked the end of an era for the Air Force and maybe for some of us... The F 117A started flying in 1981... wow, I had forgotten it had been that long? The weapons system was not acknowledged until 1988 but even with that its been 20 years...

What was life like as a family member and airman flying the F 117A prior to 1988? Well the pilots and support staff flew out Monday in secrecy and did not return home until Friday and ONLY flew at night. They could not discuss what they were doing and where they were going with their families and that must have been difficult for all involved.

Thanks to the Airmen and the families for your honor and dedication to our country!

Wright Patterson Air Force Base was not open to the general public however, Wright-Patterson employees, retirees and family members with base access were welcome to attend. The fighter was open for an hour prior to the ceremony to view the plane and historical memorabilia. The actual ceremony was brief and concluded with a fly over of Wright Patterson Air Force Base by F117A planes, one painted with in red, white and blue...

• Wright Patterson Air Force Base is located in Greene and Montgomery counties in Ohio. 8 miles NE of the Dayton Ohio central business district and within the city limits of Riverside and adjacent to Beavercreek and Fairborn.
  
• Named after the Wright Brothers and the Patterson family (owners of NCR, National Cash Register) and is referred to as the birth place of aviation...
• Wright Patterson AFB is headquarters for the Air Force Materiel Command, Air Force Institute of Technology and the National Museum of the United States Air Force (what used to be called the US Air Force Museum)
• As of 2005 WPAFB had a work force of 5517 military and 8102 civilians.

• Aliens... Roswell has nothing on us! In 1947 Wright Patt AFB was the other location for the wreckage and bodies of the mysterious "Alien" crash in Roswell, NM. Hanger 18 is now the location of interest for Alien fans...
• In 1948 WPAFB again received the remains of a 100ft saucer and 16 dead aliens...
• From 1947 to 1967 the Air Force investigated UFO's from Wright Patt under project "Blue Book" of the 12,618 sightings reported, 701 remained "unidentified".
• Hauntings... Building 70 is haunted by a little old woman... Building 209 by a ghostly boy... others have seen apparitions, hearing "people" walking where there is no one and shadowy figures appearing...
