The small town of Fort Towson has 611 smiling faces. We don't count the frowns around here, because there just aren't any...![]()
According to the census...
Fort Towson does not have a restaurant or cafe, coffee-shop, sandwich shop, or anything similar that you would recognize from the street as a restaurant. Restaurants are in nearby Hugo, Oklahoma or Paris, Texas , but there's a pleasant surprise waiting for you at Fort Towson. Even though the town does not have a restaurant at this time, everyone knows where The Corner Store is, for a quick fast-food lunch that doesn't taste like fast food.
Their fish and fries will compete with any fish restaurant. For that traditional burger, they can't be beat either. Pizza, yep! They'll make you a salad, if you're being health conscience today too. You can fill your gas tank and fill your tummy tank at the same time, pick up a small bottle of propane, or they'll even make photocopies for you if you're up there doing business and can't get back to the office but need copies. Even though we're not talking laundry here, but who knows you might spill some that special sauce on your shirt while dining at The Corner Store. If so, Fort Towson's small laundry is right next door, part of the same building.

One thing about it being this way... I have been told that the Senior Citizen Center has a good turnout for lunch by those that are of the right age. Also I believe that there's more than the average number of folks that have each other over to their homes for dinner. Promotes friends having dinner together in their homes!
The State Highway department has been working on widening highway 70 right through the middle of town for about 2 years now, so any current pics are full of construction. Hopefully they will be finished soon.
Next relocation blog, we'll talk about Life on Lake Raymond Gary which is in Fort Towson!

I am always being asked about the differences in the additions around Lake Raymond Gary. Since I currently have 3 lots listed in Holiday Lake Estates at a very good price....$21,500 for all three lots and they already have utilites in place, let's talk about Holiday Lake Estates.
Holiday Lake Estates was platted and dedicated in 1958. The lots average 50 feet wide by 150 feet long although some are wider or longer..... some are narrower and shorter.
The Addition is served by City water, sewer, garbarage collection, and cable service. The streets are paved. There are various types of housing in the addition, including brick, wooden, mobile homes, A frame, etc.
The building restrictions read as follows in regard to types of houses:
"No residential building shall be erected or maintained on any lot in Holiday Lake Estates having a ground floor area of less than 400 square feet." ... "Building exteriors must be brick, frame, or block construction, and wood exterior or block exterior must be painted."
I can't think of any type of modern day residence that would not fit within those guide lines unless it would be an rv that was smaller than 400 sq ft. Even they have frame walls these days.
Many of the non-waterfront lots are still vacant lots even though it has been platted since 1958.
Holiday Lake Estates is on the east side of the lake and is a great place to to have a residence or a seasonal home. Not all lots are waterfront, but many of the non-waterfront lots are still lakeview lots.
Where else can you be so close to fishing, feel like you're in the country, and still enjoy the amenities of being in the city limits of a town.... You Got IT.... Fort Towson, Oklahoma and one of those places at Fort Towson is in Holiday Lake Estates.
Call Judi Barrett, broker at Integrity Real Estates, and let's talk about what a great place Holiday Lake Estates is to live or own property.

Doaksville, named for Josiah Doak, was founded between 1824- 1831.
Doak had been co-owner of the Mississippi trading post where a Choctaw removal treaty was negotiated in 1820.
He and his brother preceded the Choctaws to what is now SE Oklahoma.
Doaksville was the Choctaw Indian Nation Capital from 1850 until 1863. It was the largest town in the Choctaw Indian Nation.
The very last Confederate general to surrender, ending the Civil war, happened at Doaksville when General
Stand Watie (the only Indian to become a field general in The civil war) surrendered June 23, 1865,nine weeks after Robert E. Lee surrendered. Doaksville became quite a center for commerce in this frontier area with a jail, hotel, gristmill, blacksmith, several general stores, and a tavern. The Choctaw Nation published 2 newspapers from Doaksville. It is located about a mile north of what is now the town of Fort Towson "Excavations at Doaksville represent the most widespread for a town in the Indian Territory and provide a collection of unprecedented scope from the 1840s to 1860s period." The Oklahoma Archeological Survey has a webpage about the Doaksville excavations here.
The west way to find Doaksville is to go into the Fort Towson Cemetery to the NE corner and take the steps that go over the stone wall that surrounds the cemetery.
The original Fort Towsonwas built in 1824, , under Col. Matthew Arbuckle, as a frontier outpost for Frontier Army Quartermasters to protect travelers and the Choctaws that were arriving from the Mississippi Valley and settling in nearby Doaksville , Indian Territory, which later became Oklahoma. Fort Towson was the first fort established on the western frontier and west of the Mississippi River by the federal government. Fort Towson was named for Nathaniel Towson, Paymaster General of the Army and originally called "Cantonment Towson. The Original Fort Towson is located east and north of the current town of Fort Towson. Its location is an Oklahoma Historic Site and on the National Register of Historic Places. Doaksville lies about a mile west of the old fort grounds.
Fort Towson and Southeast Oklahoma are rich in Native American History. If you enjoy outings of an historical nature, you'll enjoy living in SE Oklahoma. Or just come for a visit, you may decide to stay.
