The Common Black Rat Snake lives in many states including Oklahoma. It can be a very beneficial resident because it eats mice and rats. The position that you see this one taking is typical for the animal. It often curls up and becomes motionless when threatened BUT sometimes strikes if someone provokes it.
I don't like snakes so my mind has to take control over the emotions when I run across one of these guys. The black rat snake is a non-poisonous snake. I only paused to take this one's picture and then quietly walked away and left him alone.
The young ones of the common black snake do resemble copper head snakes and sometimes are mistakenly killed because of that. If you do not live in an area where the black rat snake lives and are moving to Oklahoma, you will want to learn a little about them. Doing a Google search for black rat snake will give you lots of information and pictures.

Pets for Adoption In McCurtain County Oklahoma
The Animal Rescue & Kare organization in McCurtain County does a tremendous amount of good for the animals that reside in our county. They are especially beneficial to the homeless dogs and cats, providing care to those animals, education to the public, and an avenue for the two to come together by promoting the adoption of these abandoned animals to people that are ready for a pet.
Their website states their mission as:
“To promote the humane treatment of companion animals by advocating for spay/neuter as the option of choice for all pets, providing care for abandoned and/or abused animals, assisting in the adoption of pets, and encouraging responsible pet ownership through educational programs.”
Here are a couple of the cutest cats that you'll find anywhere. They are available for adoption:
This is Shiver, She is a about 1 year old, is a short haired female cat that has been spayed.
She is an indoors cat, is very playful and loves to play with a pony tail holder.
She loves people and loves to be petted. Please call 580-208-2323 to adopt. An adoption fee will apply.

Jaxie is a male short haired yellow tabby.
He is litter box trained and can adapt to either being an inside cat or an outside cat.
He will nenutered upon adoption. Please call 580-236-2275.

It wasn't quite "up the creek without a paddle". And that's not really black pepper sprinkled onto this photograph.
This was more like "up the creek with the bees blocking your exit".
Got a couple of free hours today, took the boat out for a quick fishing expedition. Caught dinner in one of our favorite creeks.
Started back down the creek could hear the bees swarming.
Grab the camera and shot this photos. They were covering the tops of the trees and had our exit blocked. it took several shots to get them all, there were so many of them. We had to wait until they moved on.
So our little fishing trip ran just a tad longer than expected.

From what I've read, swarming honey bees are just homeless honey bees looking for a new home. According to KTEN news:
"Bee swarms occur most commonly during the early Spring when new queens decide to spread their wings and take part of the mother colony with her to a new nest site. Bee swarms are just simply families of homeless bees in search of new places to settle." Read the entire article.
Talk about Social Networking! The Honey Bee is a social insect. According to the
Great Plains Nature Center:
"In the wild, they create elaborate nests called hives containing up to 20,000 individuals during the summer months. (Domestic hives may have over 80,000 bees.) They work together in a highly structured social order." Read the entire article.
Honey Bees play an important part in pollination. Those luscious fruits that we enjoy, apples, pears, plums, apricots, cherries, peaches... depend upon pollination to set their fruit. So we want the honey bee, we just don't want his colony (I should say HER colony since the Queen rules here, not a king!) in our back yard. If you discover a hive that needs to be removed, the best bet is to call your local State University Extension Center. They will know who to call. Then a beekeeper may show up at your door and give those precious little bugs a new home!
