Christmas 2008 has come and gone. Many people, in addition to cutting their own Christmas Tree, go searching for Mistletoe to add to their holiday décor. While the tradition is that anyone under the mistletoe can be kissed, that evergreen parasite with the small white berries is the “Kiss of Death” for your trees that it was clipped from.

Mistletoe is readily spread by birds that eat the white berries. The berries have a sticky substance in them that causes the dropping from the birds (which contains the mistletoe seeds) to stick to the tree branches on which they are perched. The seeds sprout and the parasitic plant grows by stealing the water and nutrients from its host tree.

Some groves of trees have such heavy mistletoe infestation that even though they may be deciduous trees, they appear to be evergreens from a distance.

If you cut the mistletoe off, it will grow back. The only way to get rid of it is to cut the branch off. That in itself can cause damage to the tree. Experts tend to agree that healthy trees can stand a “few” infestations of mistletoe, but how many are too many and can kill your tree? It takes years to grow those nice large trees, don’t risk them to the parasite mistletoe.

From what I’ve read, Florel brand plant growth regulator is the only chemical that has been approved to arrest the growth of mistletoe. It seems that if you spray the mistletoe branches with the diluted florel mixture, it should keep it from spreading for about 4 years and then you will need to retreat.

We recently purchased some property that has beautiful trees on it and some of them have mistletoe bouquets growing on their branches. Come next spring, I’m spraying Florel on them because I want to protect my trees as much as I can. If you have a similar problem, I encourage you to not ignore it. Great trees can add much value to your real estate. Don’t let mistletoe rob you of some of that value.

My Favorite Book Store has such a sense of humor! You catch it as soon as you visit their website that has a YouTube Video "Is Your Soul Mate a Book?"

I have enjoyed buying from the Better World Book Store for several reasons, one of which is that part of the proceeds goes to promote world literacy. BUT there are many selfish reasons that I buy from them; the books are CHEAP which means that I can buy a bunch of them... They have good books. A search of their books using the terms "real estate" turned up

So if you enjoy finding a good bargain and love books, check out the Better World Bookstore. I've posted about this book store before but I knew that I had to post again when my books that I ordered sent me an email :)

In the email my books asked how the weather is where they are moving to (my home) and asked if they would need a dust jacket. They talked about how hard it was to leave Mishawaka, Indiana...they had made friends there among the other books but one book was grateful for being shipped out. He/She did not enjoy being sandwiched between the two books that he/she had been between for 5 months. The email was signed by a list of the books that I had purchased and included a tracking number so that I could check to see where they were during their trip to get to me.

I would post the email here but did not know about copyright laws of emails sent to to someone so did not post. BUT I think you get the drift.
