Speechless Sundays - One of the 7 Natural Wonders
We went to Ontario, Canada earlier this year and went to Niagara Falls for the first time.
I truly was Speechless when I first saw the falls.
I took dozens of photos and still haven't posted any yet, but thought I'd put this one out today because it's just so stunning.
Niagara is one of our 7 national natural wonders.
In this photo you can see the falls to the left that are on the U.S. side, and the amazing "horse shoe" falls on the Canadian side.
We took the Maid of The Mist ferry ride directly into the falls and it was breathtaking.

Watching Breakfast Television (a Toronto CITY TV network news/variety morning show) on Monday morning, we were told that a young foreign student fell into the Niagara River and went over the falls. They were about to search for her body with helicopters as daylight came...
As regular readers know, Niagara Falls and surrounding areas are a frequent mini-vacation destination for Helen, Alec and I. We will visit two or three times a year.
I know exactly where that spot is... Apparently she was on the railing posing for a picture when she lost her balance and fell into the river.
My immediate reactions were varied... how stupid... how sad that a happy occasion can turn tragic so quickly... Could this have been prevented?... I thought of the people she was with, how they must have felt at that instant... I thought about her parents and family.
It is easy to criticize her actions after the fact... the truth is, at that age, sometimes we feel invincible, and I recall car accidents and other "stupid" actions of my youth that could easily have changed forever the course of my life and others, perhaps just as tragically.
In general, I was perceived by most to be a good kid, one whom most parents felt was trustworthy and responsible. But thinking back, I can recall many actions that were made in the moment that could have ended so differently.
What can we do?
Can we "bubble wrap" the world to protect everyone?
There are warnings, in words and in pictures of the dangers.
I can remember visiting both ridges of the Grand Canyon a few years ago. There are many places with no railings. At some point, we must take responsibility of our actions and understand possible consequences before we act.
As a parent of a precocious seven year old, I realize that this is my duty. To ensure that Alec is well grounded in assessing a situation, trying to understand the risk, and possible consequences to himself and to others of his actions. To ensure he understands that there are events and substances that can affect his ability to reasonably assess a situation and to make better choices.
I am thinking that this is a lesson we can all always keep on learning, I know I can.
This was a tragedy, a seemingly vital person's life snuffed out for no reason. I offer my sympathy to her friends and family.
Death is a certainty and will visit us all. Even though in many instances there is little or nothing we can or could do to prevent a tragic event, our actions and choices can play a part in preventing many of them.
I share the news of this tragedy in the hopes that we can learn from it and make better and safer choices ourselves and teach our young the lessons they need to learn to equip themselves for life.

I love living in my community ! Originally from Salerno, Italy, my family immigrated from there when I was 8 years old. Although I think my home country is the one of the most beautiful countries in the world (especially the Amalfi Coast!), I am now very proud to call Canada home, having lived here for 41 years..oops I just gave away my age!!

Growing up in the St.Catharines/Niagara area was fantastic, my family and I had the opportunity to visit Niagara Falls when ever we wanted. How can you beat the beauty of that roaring thunder of millions of gallons of water rushing over creating one of the seven wonders of the world!

We could take a leisurely ride down Lakeshore road to Niagara on the Lake, and view all the beautiful wineries that tourists visit every year. Once in Niagara on the Lake you are transported back to a beautiful town over looking Lake Ontario, little quaint shops with different items to purchase and some of the most beautiful architecture I have ever seen in the period homes built from yester days.

Then if we wanted to experience our different cultures of our wonderful country wee would drive down to Toronto and experience the variety of ethnic backgrounds and all their wonderful culture, food, art and customs. The fashion in Toronto competes with the top fashion capitols of the world.

So as I look back I am so full of great memories that I had growing up in my neighborhood that my husband and I are lucky enough to be raising out two boys just around the corner from where we grew up. My children attend the same school that my younger brother attended and they will be going to the same high school as I did as a young adult! St. Catharines is not a huge metropolitan city but has a population of about 132.000.00. The boundaries are"north end" that hugs Lake Ontario, the "south end" that boasts our very well known Brock University and the city is divided by the "Queen Elizabeth Highway". With the size of this city it still amazes me that I often go to the market, local theaters, bank, church and meet kids I grew up with that like me have left the St.Catharines area for work and other reasons only to come back to their roots, because they loved it so much.
I know if I chose to I could live anywhere, but I choose here, I love St. Catharines/Niagara area for my work, to raise my family and enjoy life with wonderful friends.

I have never been nervous speaking in front of the public in fact I have had to speak to people all day long in my first career of hairstylist! That was always one on one, so it never felt intimidating. Well this past weekend I rented a booth in the Lincoln/Grimsby local home and garden show. The coordinator of the show asked if I could possibly speak about Images Staged with Flair and about benefits of staging your home. I was a little horrified and surprised when he announced that "yes there is time for you to do a presentation on your staging services"...
My body froze and I started feeling numb!! Not only was I going to speak in front of a large audience but I also had to put together a power point presentation!! Yikes!! The only good thing is that I have a thirteen year old son that out of pity for his old mom, offered his help to show me how to put a power point presentation together.
Well after quite a few changes and attempts I finished the power point and it looked great.... I spoke on Saturday afternoon at 12 noon which was a fantastic time, lots of people around.
The Home-show was a huge success, there was a large number of people who attended and I met some great people to network with but also many leads for future business...
I did my presentation to a good size group of people who seemed like they were listening and interested in what I was saying. I had great positive feed back and I am so glad that I can say that it wasn't so bad after all...
I finally did my first presentation in front of a large group..

Niagara Region -
The Average Sale price of a single family home rose to $225,259 from the $215,005 reported for the same period in 2009. This 4.8% rise in sale price is less than the 5.8% average price
Increase for homes sold via the Canadian MLS Systems across the country. Locally the sales for Luxury Homes ($400,000 - 1 million plus) rose 35% while the number of homes sold under $200,000 was comparable to 2009 levels. This change in volumes by price range has caused the average price to be skewed upwards.
Most Markets in Niagara are described as balanced however Grimsby, Stoney Creek are still in a Sellers market as inventory levels remain low & Buyer demand is high.
Looking ahead for 2011, the Niagara Region is expected to have modest growth in sales with high demand in first half of the year. Recent changes to the Mortgage guidelines may affect some of the first time Buyers but the artificially low mortgage rates will encourage people to get into the housing market .
What this means is, if you are planning to buy or sell your home this year, they are forecasting that the first half of the year may be the best plan. Call me today for your Free Home Market Evaluation and/or Buyer Information Session. There is no obligation, I believe that the more information my clients have, the more informed decisions they can make......when they are ready!
