This past last weekend in May, about 24 of us here at RE/MAXPremier in Vaughan,worked in the blazing sun from 600 am to 200 pm with our First Annual "Yard Sale for The Cure." This event, initiated by RE/MAX Hallmark in the Beaches Area of Toronto, was our very first attempt at raising funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation in Canada. The n Breast Cancer FounCanadiadation found that this was such a terrific community event, that they've taken over the sponsorship of the event which takes place the last Satruday of May annually. Along with "1-800 got Junk' and the Canadian Bank of Commerce and RE/MAX Ontario/Atlantic Canada,have raised thousands of dollars thus far for this notable cause. We started in April to assemble a committee of a total of 12 Agents and 3 of our "partners" who lease space in our 6000 sq.ft offices. Everyone contributed mightly. We were afraid that we wouln't have enough for the Yard Sale to take place in front of our offices. But by Friday night, the eve of the Sale, our guys and gals really contributed by bringing in not only their cllient's clutter, but also their own. Others contributed in kind with cash donations.
In our first year, we are proud to say we raised over THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS! This was done much to the credit of our two chairmen and our committee of 12 dedicated Agents, who organized everything from collections of goods, sorting and selling to the many curious who came to shop and shop they did!
With lots of munchies-hmaburgers, ham on a bun, hot dogs and drinks to satisfy the palate of the many adults and kids who helped us raise monies for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
I was most happy to lend my experience in raising funds for a very selfishly motivated reason. My dear wife Audrey, was twice afflicted with this dreaded disease. The last time, she suffered removal of 10 lymph nodes, 3 of which were Cancerous. Thank God that she's been in remission for the past 10 years and is still going strong at 73!, working 3 days a week for our solicitor, after retiring from the Provincial Government in 2000. i must add that after her successful treatments, she became involved with the Toronto Breast Cancer Survivor's Dragon Boat Team for 5 years and we enjoyed every thrilling moment.
We will be presenting our cheque for $3000.00 tp a representative of the Foundation at our July Sales Meeting. Look for the posting of the event and the photo-op next month.
We. in Canada, also particpate in the "Run for the Cure," and we hope to raise even more funds for this worthwhile cause. If a similar "run" takes place in your area, I encourage you to participate. Even if you don't run or walk, raise monies and show the community that you work in that you care.
