About Ottawa's Chapman Mills

Penny wise, chrome foolish

Valerie Zinger: Real Estate Agent in Ottawa, ON

Are you trying to save money by using the toilet bowl cleaner to also clean the bathroom sink? Many toilet bowl cleaners are highly corrosive. Over time, the cleaner will eat away at the chrome on your metal sink stopper. It is likely also doing damage to the other metal in the sink and taps.

Look for the bony hand sign on the bottle that indicated that the contents are highly corrosive. The contents are usually some solution of hydrochloric acid. Not all cleaners have it so check the bowl cleaner and a) replace the cleaner with a more environmentally and metal friendly cleaner OR b) put the cleaner away so that it is used only for the toilet bowl. If you have a cleaning lady or children who may not be aware of the dangers and damages that may occur, take no chances and get rid of the corrosive and poisonous product.

It will be impossible to replace just the metal on the sink so a whole new sink plus possible plumbing charges will be incurred. Replacing the sink is going to cost much more than what you are savings by using the toilet cleaner as an all purpose product.

Don't let the cleaner eat away your savings.
