It's that time of the year again for the Toronto International Film Festival ("TIFF") running from September 8, 2011 to September 18, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Toronto International Film Festival is a rival to the Cannes Film Festival in France.

TIFF, which started in 1976, is known around the world. Movie screenings are open to industry members as well as the public.

According to Wikipedia, TIFF showcased 339 films from 59 countries at 32 screens in downtown Toronto venues in 2010.

Many Hollywood studios, and others, now premiere their North American or worldwide debut of films that they hope will generate buzz for the Oscars and hopefully win. Others win significant acclaim and awards at TIFF and go on to win at the Oscars.

Some well known recent films that were screened at the Toronto International Film Festival include The King's Speech, Precious, Slumdog Millionaire, Chariots of Fire, The Big Chill, Ray and more.

Numerous well known and lesser known Hollywood stars as well as stars from elsewhere come to Toronto during TIFF.

Peter Kent, Member of Parliament for Thornhill appointed Canada's Minister of the Environment

Earlier today on January 4, 2011, Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Peter Kent as Canada's Minister of the Environment.  Peter Kent is the federal Member of Parliament ("MP") for the Thornhill riding.  Peter was first elected to the House of Commons  as MP for Thornhill in 2008.  Prior to his new role as Minister of the Environment, Peter was Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (America).

Peter previously worked as a well-known television journalist and TV news anchor in Canada and the United States.  Over the years, he has worked for Canadian TV networks including CBC, CTV and Global.  He also worked at the American television network NBC.

The Thornhill riding includes the portion of the Town of Markham between Yonge Street and Highway 404 as well as the portion of the City of Vaughan between Highway 400 and Yonge Street and south of Rutherford Road.

I watched the Town of Markham's Santa Claus Parade on November 27, 2010 on Main Street Markham.  Peter Kent was one of several local politicians to participate in parade.  The photographs in this article were taken during the parade.
