New Bicycle BMX park at Lake Shore and Ellis

Toronto BMX bicycle Riders to Get New Parkette
The Sales Office for Park Lake Residences is being returned to the City of Toronto; Parks and Recreation. Construction (demolition) will begin shortly to create a BMX bicycle park on the narrow strip of land that is adjacent to the Gardiner Expressway and parallel with Lake Shore Blvd West at Ellis Avenue.
BMX riders who have built ramps and jumps at High Park at the south duck pond have created concerns about environmental damage and has resulted in complaints at City Hall.
Until last year, there had been jumps and ramps inside High Park near the duck pond just steps from Queensway at Parkside Drive. The area is an ecologically significant area, according to the city. In May, the informal, freestyle cycling area was dismantled by the city with help from members of different First Nations communities. With shovels and rakes in hand, they restored what is known to them as Snake Mound, a sacred burial ground. The area has been replanted and fenced off and is currently being monitored for any further cycling activity.
Hosted by the City of Toronto, the meeting attracted riders of all ages from across Toronto and beyond to the Rousseau Room of the Swansea Town Hall. "We can design from the ground up," said Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, who expressed her excitement for the project. "We can do something amazing here."

Are there any plans posted of the tract or parkette? How far will this extend East? Will they provide a parking lot for the bicyclists?

How Your Habits Can Endanger Your House Marketing Efforts

06-01-11
Alec Kinnear

Diving into the market with your dwelling is a big deal. Literally. Time and time again, however, sellers and their Realtors® manage to make unfortunate blunders that grow very costly Hardly anybody can really put the chances at selling a house at stake, and everybody wants to hit the best possible deal on their house.

For those reasons, we are sharing with you a défilé of the most frequent ones, and illustrate how some well-meant ideas sometimes backfire. So now for the do-nots of presenting a house.

Potentially Irritating Habits
Just before you resolve to host your first open house, acquire a dog or a wolf, three weasels and thirteen crows. Unleash them into the house and lock them up by themselves for a day or two. This will prove to every open-house visitor that you feel good about bringing nature home and that the place is absolutely animal-friendly.

Once you’ve caught your sweet pets and secured them in their own cages, it is time to manage a poker at yours. Make sure you put “Only for Smokers” on your invitation, and to invite the scent seller from the next neighbourhood as the “highlight of the night”. Offer cheap cigarettes and cigars for those who forgot to bring their own and advise the guests to smoke in the middle of the house if possible.

In order to boost the impressive potential more still, have plants delivered that are in the middle of their blooming and distribute them all around the house in every room. To make sure that your investment is noticed, let your children shake the pollen off onto the carpets and walls like that. Most of the pollen should be snowed around the main door.

The day preceding the open house, stop feeding your huge dog that your spouse named Cuddles and attach him to the backyard fence. Take a smoke in the hall at least 20 minutes before a showing and abandon the remnants of the cigarette in the kitchen ashtray. Refrain from taking out the trash if you are anticipating a buyer. Whoever comes around will hope for a very homey account.

Conclusion
If you can take to your heart a bare minimum of 40% of this suggestions, we guarantee you that your tries to attract sane home shoppers will be fruitless. The special significance of Toronto's High Park Cherry Blossom [Sakura]

High Park Cherry BlossomIt's the time of the year when the cherry blossoms [sakura] in High Park are in full bloom. A visit to view the blossom is symbolic of rebirth and renewal in the nature of life in Japanese culture. It is a century old custom of flower viewing [hanami] in Japan, and is the first flower to bloom in Spring signifying new life at the start of Spring.

The High Park cherry blossom features the Somei-Yoshino fluffy characteristics, presented as a gift to Toronto by the citizens of Tokyo in 1959 as a symbol of friendship for looking after the Japanese Canadian in Toronto.

The experience of viewing the blossoms are very moving, as they serve as a reminder of past and present for Japanese Canadians who lived in internment camps in B.C. in the 1940, and for those currently struggling over the news of the earthquake and tsunami disaster back home.

If you have not had the chance to admire the blossoms, don't miss the cherry blossom walk in High Park. Here is a link of the map for the walk.

High Park - Toronto's Jewel of a Park - (My Toronto Visit Part V)

Liz Moras ~ Chilliwack Realtor, Garrison Crossing,Chilliwack, Abbotsford: Real Estate Agent in Chilliwack, BC

How fortunate could I be to have my B & B right next to High Park? Over 399 acres of almost wilderness right in the middle of the city. No wonder Toronto is called a City within a Park!

Almost a third of the park is still in its natural state, with unusual and rare plants, like woodland ferns, cup plants and wild blue lupines. My almost 3 hour walk around the park was finished off on the park train - when I said 'daddy take me home, my feet are killing me!' lol

I was trying to figure out why I took the photo of that tree branch when my daughter said - 'look at the squirrels!' and then I remembered - 0h brother eh? lol

This was Day 1 of my many walks throughout Toronto and the surrounding area...

High Park offers year-round attractions and amentities, including historic Colborne Lodge. Its also home to the well-known Dream in High Park. This favorite open-air theatrical event has become a tradition for Torontonians and visitors alike, each summer. House, a volunteer built playground, animal paddocks, sports fields, an outdoor ice rink, and the beautifully landscaped Hillside Gardens.

I remember seeing Sylvie's pics of High Park - especially the Swans in a post she did last year - who'd have thought I'd be seeing them for myself!

Grenadier Pond is at the western edge of the park. It is named after the local Town of York garrison of the 1800s and their use of the pond for fishing. There are two local myths circulating about the Pond. One is that British Grenadiers fell through its thin ice when crossing to defend the city in the War of 1812. Other myths include that the pond is 'bottomless', that is, its depth cannot be measured due to the amount of mud. Fishing remains a popular pastime. Fish caught in the pond are safe to eat, and fishing derbies and casting contests have been held there.

In 1836, John George Howard purchased a 160-acre property in the County of York, to the west of Toronto, for a sheep farm, at the cost of $1,000.00. ] It was here that Howard designed and built Colborne Lodge] as the residence for himself and his wife Jemima Frances Meikle. The Howards named their property 'High Park' as it was situated on the highest point of land along the Humber Bay shoreline. After a successful career as architect, engineer and land surveyor to the City of Toronto, Howard retired here in 1855.

In 1873, Howard and his wife agreed to convey their country property to the City of Toronto. There were several conditions to the conveyance, including that the Howards continue to live at their residence, no alcohol ever be served in the park, and that the City hold the park "for the free use, benefit and enjoyment of the Citizens of Toronto for ever and to be called and designated at all times thereafter High Park".. Howard received a lifetime pension from the City in exchange for the property.

How cool is this?

I'd love to see this park in the winter time!
