For all you antique lovers and garage sale addicts mark this Saturday on your calendar. The Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario is having their 3rd annual antique and artisans show and sale in Leaskdale just 10 minutes north of Uxbridge. Perhaps you will find a bargain at one of the community yard sales scheduled for the same day.

The sale is sponsored by The Lucy Maude Montgomery Society of Ontario who will be opening the church and the manse for the dealers to display their wares. View the furniture, glassware, fine china, linens, and an assortment of antique jewelery. If your a treasure hunter, looking for a bargain, shop the abundant local yard sales to your hearts content.

The Historical plaque erected on the front lawn of the Manse property reads as follows:

"LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY"

In this house the author of "Anne of Green Gables" lived for fifteen years, and here wrote eleven of her twenty-two novels, including "Anne of the Island" (1915) and "Anne's House of Dreams" (1916). Born in 1874 at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, she was educated at Charlottetown and Halifax. From 1898 to 1911, she lived at Cavendish, P.E.I., and there began her career as a novelist. In 1911 she married the Rev. Ewan Macdonald, a Presbyterian minister, and came with him to Leaskdale. They moved in 1926 to Norval, and nine years later to Toronto, where she died in 1942. Mrs. Macdonald was awarded the O.B.E. by King George V in 1935

This Friday or Saturday take a short rip to Leaskdale and visit the Leaskdale Manse, Home of the famous Canadian Author “Lucy Maud Montgomery” and her husband Rev. Ewan Macdonald a Presbyterian minister from 1911 to 1926, It was during her residence here that she wrote 11 of her 22 best selling novels.

The Manse is located on Durham 1 in Leaskdale just a few minutes north of Uxbridge

Designated as a Provincial Historical site in 1965 and a National Historic site in 1997 the home along with St. Paul's Presbyterian Church are quickly becoming a significant part of the venues that attract tourists to Uxbridge.

"100 Years of Anne" Goes To The "EX"

Fall Fairs signal the end of summer, the last hurrah for some before the return to school but this year is just a little different for a small community with something to be very proud of. You see Uxbridge was home to the famous author Lucy Maude Montgomery who resided in Leaskdale from 1911 to 1926 and here, as the wife of Rev. Ewan Macdonald a Presbyterian minister, is where she wrote 11 of her 22 best selling novels. One of those 11 was "Anne of the Island", written in 1915, was the third book of her most famous series that began with "Anne of Green Gables"

August 20th Uxbridge tourism will receive a big shot in the arm with the help of a few local friends. The Canadian National Exhibition is featuring a "100 years of Anne" display in the Heritage Court of the Direct Energy Centre. The Lucy Maude Montgomery Society of Ontario, the Township of Uxbridge, and Gribble Landscape Creations have joined forces to create a showcase of the author's writing and photography along with her love of gardens as a tribute to this popular Canadian author.

August 20th has been declared "Uxbridge Day at the CNE". Uxbridge has organized a parade through the midway starting at 6:00pm which will feature Uxbridge's celebrated Town Crier, the Legion Colour Party and Pipe Band, A horse and surrey with local councilors on board, our antique fire truck and a model train courtesy of the York Durham Heritage railway.

Antiques to Yard Sales

 Uxbridge - Leaskdale - St Pauls Manse There will be more than 35 antique vendors and artisans on hand for the second annual Festival of Antiques and Artisans at the Historic Leaskdale church and Manse. 

The sale is sponsored by The Lucy Maude Montgommery Society of Ontario who will be opening the church and  the manse for the dealers to display their wares. View the furniture, glassware, fine china, linens, and an assotment of antique jewllery. If your a treasure hunter, looking for a bargain, shop the abundant local yard sales to your hearts content.

In addition to the vendors 2 professional appraisers will be on hand to offer valuations on your antiques, books and collectables @ $20 per item.  

If that's not enough to keep you busy there will also be wagon rides around the hamlet. Refreshments will also be available.
