Water tumbling over the Mill City Falls is much clearer this week and a little lower. Kayakers and rafters are taking advantage of this nice day to hit the river. In fact, I snapped a picture of these rafters this morning.

ODFW: North and South Santiam River: Stream flows in the North and South Santiam rivers have been coming down, but still could come back up quickly with warmer temperatures. Steelhead numbers at Willamette Falls are encouraging, with more than 6,000 having come over so far. Willamette mainstem anglers have had some good success in the Salem area. Spring chinook numbers remain very low and all streams above Willamette Falls, except for the Molalla River, are now closed to the retention of any chinook.
Most of the valley pond stocking with trout is done for this season. Warmer water temperatures make them less suitable for trout and better for warm water fish, however, Walling and Wirth ponds in Salem will be stocked for Free Fishing Weekend. Bass crappie, bluegill, and catfish are available in most of the valley floor ponds and are becoming more active as the water warms up.
Stream flows in the Breitenbush and North Santiam rivers above Detroit Reservoir, and in Quartzville Creek above Green Peter Reservoir are receding some, though still affected by snowmelt. All three streams are scheduled to be stocked with trout this week.
For more information about the stocking schedules and the weekly recreation report check out the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website.

Thanks to a very nice Realtor from Idaho, I had a request to add a weekly fishing report for the North Santiam. I appreciate your interested and the suggestion. I hope this helps! Leslie
North and South Santiam River: The North Santiam has been very high for the last several days and, though flows are moderating, is forecast to remain that way for a while. The South Santiam is fishable, but still a little high and expected to remain so during the near future. Steelhead numbers are increasing in the rivers and Chinook are beginning to show up in the lower Santiam.

The river is beginning to clear up but the water level for this time of year is unseasonably high.
Fish count at Willamette Falls, (Oregon City) as of Wednesday, May 28:
Daily Cumulative
Summer Steelhead 206 6107
Spring Chinook adult 164 5120
Spring Chinook jack 9 52
Spring Chinook mini jack 3 18
Stream flows in the Breitenbush and North Santiam rivers above Detroit Reservoir, and in Quartzville Creek above Green Peter Reservoir have come down from the very high levels of last week, but are still high and cold. Scheduled stocking will be delayed for another week.

The City of Mill City, Oregon is once again planning for the upcoming holiday. Planned completely by volunteers and funded by donations, the celebration begins with a Kiddie Parade which is followed immediately by the Grand Parade. It is a
n old fashioned parade with participants from all over the Santiam Canyon.
The parade is lead by the Grand Marshall, followed by the queen and her court. Many repeat parade entries include the Shriner's motorized bathtubs, the Linn County Mounted Patrol, and units from the Gates, Lyons and Mill City Fire Departments. Be sure to check out the Mill City Fire Department "Princesses" truly a sight to see. The parade wouldn't be complete with out a visit from Smokey the Bear down from his patrol of the Willamette National Forest headquarters in Detroit.
After the parade, many vendor booths can be visited on Allen Field, at Santiam High School. The Arts and Crafts show is held in the high school gym and there is some talk of a car show this year.
Music and food booths are available at Kimmel Park beginning around 7:00 in the evening. Kimmel Park is the gathering point for the spectacular display of fireworks sponsored by the Mill City Fire Department. The Fire Department works very hard through out the year to raise money to provide the residents and visitors to an outstanding program. From the first loud "BOOM" resonating throughout the canyon as it echoes off the mountain sides, to the traditional "Good Nite" sparkling in the night sky, the men and women volunteers of company 790 works diligently to make every July Fourth a celebration and the fireworks display the pentacle of the evening.
Come see and hear for yourself why the fireworks in the canyon are something to behold.

If you would like more information on the Fourth of July Celebration in Mill City, please contact our office by email at info@BrendaAndSandy.com or call our office at 800-423-7740 x 1910.
