Traveling Localism-The Red Hills Market in Dundee Oregon-YUM!

While visiting family in the Sherwood/Dundee Oregon area, we visited The Red Hills Market. This was a requirement as Larry's brother Shiloh is a chef there, we are already fans of his food and we had not yet been to The Red Hills Market.

Located at 115 SW 7th in Dundee, the market is just off the main road and easily accessible for a quick bite (or long one if you have time).

The front of the building is nearly as inviting as the inside with tall windows that let you peek in. There is re-purposed wine barrel seating in Adirondack style just under the protective eaves. Whether waiting for your fellow dinner guests or just visiting after dinner, they are very comfortable.

Once inside, the chic wine country elegance touches all senses. The decor is part of the attitude and the furnishings are rustic, sturdy and generous enough for dinner and dessert plates. You can hear the other diners chatter but it is a fun part of the local ambiannce. The market has 'wine country' decor, trinkets and in the kitchen fun style books to peruse upon or purchase as your food is being prepared.

As for the food, there are many choices on the menu depending on your mood. Hearty, hand crafted sandwiches filled with roast beef or turkey and all the fixings (locally made blue cheese dressing on the roast beef for example), hand tossed (thin and crispy) wood fired pizza are on the menu. I am a vegetarian so eating out for me usually involves a little more planning but The Red Hills Market has really well put together salads with local produce and fresh artisan cheeses.

When you taste the food you will know why there is a deli case with the dressings, cheeses, farm fresh eggs and scrumptious desserts right at the front. The Red Hills Market makes it easy to take some local food delights home to share (or simply whisk away so you can have an extra taste later).

Red Wine on Black Friday...Touring Portland's wine country one taste at a time!

Oregon's Pinot Noir in a wine glassI know many people just love getting out there in the hustle and bustle of the crowds and shopping...I on the other hand am not one of them. In fact, I find shopping in mass crowds almost painful..I mean, I'd almost rather go get my teeth cleaned..seriously..lol.

So, instead of heading to the malls, my hubby and I and some good friends decided to head down to the Dundee Hills area to do some wine tasting. One of the things I love about living in Portland is that we have some of the best wines available to us..and mostly some really good Pinot Noirs. There were five of us, so we all chose a winery to check out.

We did it the right way...and rented a limo (Lucky Limos are great).. a nice stretch one that could seat 6 very comfortably. This way, we could taste to our hearts content without worrying about drinking and driving.Thank you driver Stepanie!

Our five winery picks for the day were Patricia Green Cellars, Maresh Red Hill Vineyards, Cana's Feast Winery, Sokol Blosser, and my choice of Winderlea to be rounded off nicely a the Ponzi Bistro in Dundee for dinner.

Well, It seems that we are not the only ones to think this was a great get away..apparently Black Friday is one of the most busiest wine touring days...who knew! I have to say that I would much rather squeeze by someone to get a taste of some delish Pinot Noir..or cheese and crackers than tangling with someone at the sale racks. In fact, I can attest to the fact that folks were very pleasant and smily when you squeezed by them in the tasting rooms.

So..if you're ever in need of a good bottle of wine from Oregon's fantastic wine country, consider any one of these to be a very tasty Pinot Noir. I'll even throw in a good tip...you can't go wrong with most Pinot's from 2008..it was a very good year!
