Having Dim Sum in Chinatown/OldTown Portland New Year's Day

Carla Muss-Jacobs - Exclusive Buyers Agent Portland | Portland Real Estate |: Real Estate Agent in Portland, OR

Nothing starts the New Year off right more than good food.  And I enjoyed my day having Dim Sum in Chinatown, located in Old Town Portland.

And after writing my post about Hyper-Local is Everywhere You Go I forgot to bring my camera!  My son's cell phone sufficed.

We choose a wonderful restaurant Fong Chong located on the corner of NW 4th and Everett.

What makes Fong Chong so much fun is their Dim Sum carts that wheel by. Dim sum is a Cantonese term for a type of Chinese dish that involves small individual portions of food, usually served in a small steamer basket or on a small plate.  Dim Sum is served all day at Fong Chong's.  They do have a menu, and traditiional meals can be ordered.

This is true a'la carte dining . . . the carts roll past and each plate contains 2 or 3 DELICIOUS looking items of food.

Each dim sum looks like a work of art, either the very glassy, see-through type wrap (Gao), or the thick puffed flour (Bau) -- wrapped around a taste sensation!  Sticky rice served in a lotus leaf, pot stickers, rice noodles rolls, egg rolls . . . DELICIOUS!!

The thing with Dim Sum is you can't possibly have one of each -- although you're eyes are bigger than your stomach . . . and you think you can.  The plates piled up fast at our table!!  After stuffing ourselves we were already planning our trip back -- to "try that next time!"  My son, actually to Fong Chong's New Year's Eve with friends, and again New Year's day!!

Also, Lan Su Chinese Gardens is located right around the corner,  So if you're new to the area, or simply want something fun to do -- try a taste of  Dim Sum at Fong Chong's either before or after you visit the Chinese Gardens.  A great 1/2 day trip in the City of Portland!
