Portland Oregon:Take a Coffee Break at the Manhattan Cafe in Irvington

When you think of a cafe, what do you think of? Do you think about the food and coffee, or do you think about the people or activity that takes place there? One local cafe owner, Angela Snow, who toured for years as a professional ballet dancer based in New York, found that her favorite memories revolved around cafes.

“It’s about the monumental moments in life”, she said. So she decided that she wanted to help create those moments for others. Life moves very fast, and we often don’t take enough time to sit down and have a great conversation with another person without the distraction of television, cell phones and Facebook. Those distractions aren’t what you’re going to remember at the end of your life. Angela now presides over The Manhattan Cafe, a place where those memorable moments take place, for the price of a coffee or sandwich. Personally, I’m impressed that, even having traveled more than most flight attendants while on tour dancing, Angela decided to come back home to Portland and start her own business. It’s a real testament to the appeal of the Portland community.

The Manhattan Cafe Crew

The Manhattan Cafe can be described in looks much like many cafes, with its coffee machine, counter and tables, but it’s the personal touches that make this place special. For instance, the picture of Angela dancing that hangs on the wall, or the beautiful pictures of New York that decorate the whole room. The personal touches can also be tasted in the food and drinks. You’ll find a full coffee and espresso bar there. I don’t drink coffee myself, but I have heard theirs is fabulous. I drink protein shakes. I love protein, being vegetarian and an athlete, so this was the perfect solution to the, “What should I drink besides coffee” question… which is dumb because I’m going to a coffee shop on purpose but don’t want to drink coffee…anyway, you see my dilemma. Where was I? Oh yeah, the personal touches… since I’m a regular there and happened to stop by on my last birthday, they made me my protein shake as usual but stuck a candle in it and sang me happy birthday! How can you not love that!

They also have an amazing selection of Panini sandwiches, salads and soups. My favorite being The Central Park that comes with goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and a mixture of Mediterranean olives on sourdough bread. I tried to make it at home once, but it failed miserably compared to the one they make, so I’m going to leave it up to them and I’ll find something else to make for dinner.

Some of you may be wondering what's going on around here, but my friend Herb was quite awake at Activerain when I posted this .........

Let me bring my community to yours (very interesting concept)

Herb was the first to comment, very few comments came in and away I went to The Venetian Hotel to photograph it for him.

I will be posting about three different posts with photographs to one of Herb's favorite communities Irvington in Portland Oregon on The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada.

As a Portland Realtor I quite enjoy the Irvington neighborhood and homes for sale. There is a special beauty about many of those homes that is hard to put into words, but once you are there and into many of these homes you will understand why the Irvington neighborhoods is a highly sought after place to live in Portland.

Irvington is bordered by Alameda, Grant Park and the Sabin neighborhoods. Irving Park located off of NE
Fremont and 10th is an excellent place to walk the dog, play some sports or picnic under the trees. The tree-lined streets are filled with friendly neighbors and kids playing in the streets. Backyard barbeque's and yard sales are frequent during the sun-shiny days.

Most Portland Realtors I speak with always have high regards for the Irvington neighborhood. A home in particular that I remember was this one gorgeous home off of NE 16th that had a stunning front yard landscape job that had a rock garden surrounding a variety of fruit trees. As you entered the home you saw an open floor plan where the kitchen, dining room and living room were seamless perfect. Hardwood floors and a fireplace fit for a king. The spacious upstairs master bedroom had a bathroom that was more like a day spa and a balcony that overlooked a backyard paradise. The basement level was my favorite and made for an entertainer that can keep a party going all night.

If you are relocating to Portland or a local but unfamiliar with certain neighborhoods, make sure you ask your Portland Oregon Realtor to view Irvington. We were recently hired to stage a 1924 vintage condo, one of 8 units in a building loaded with character. It's close-in location in the Irvington neighborhood in Portland, Oregon is ideal for shopping, great restaurants, and public transportation. Although this unit is just 965 sq ft., it seems larger. We asked the seller to describe the other seven owners in this building so that we could get an idea of the target buyer .... mostly professional women over 40. So we staged the condo to appeal to that buyer ...

Update: This condo has SOLD in less than 2 weeks from listing ~ and the buyer is exactly the demographic that we staged this home for (a professional woman over 40)!

The spacious Living room has original hardwood floors, crown moldings, charming touches like wainscoting and a gas fireplace with great mantle detail (we were asked not to use nails or hooks in the lathe & plaster walls so we had to "lean" the art, better to be safe than sorry!)...
