Youth Football...A Mid August Tradition...!!!

Fran 'The Title Man' Gaspari Title Insurance-PA & NJ : Title Company in Limerick, PA

Every year for the last 6 years I have had at least one son playing what we call 'Midget Football'...

The season starts with rigorous 4 days a week practices lasting 2 hours...the kids whose ages range from 7 through 13 are sorted out by age and assigned to appropriate teams...

The practices are from 6PM to 8PM so as to avoid the usual intense heat of the day and take advantage of an early evening breeze which occurs most everyday in our area!

The practices consist of a series of calesthenics, stretching, and warming up activities and then break up into smaller groups to run through play drills and special skills exercises!

There are about 8 or 9 teams covering three age groups...not counting 'flag football' for the really young and football eager kids!

At the same time all this practicing and perspiring and hard work and tackling and getting tackled are going on there are about 150 cheerleading aspirants practicing with about the same intensity as the footballers...

At any given time it is not unusual to see close to 500 kids, parents, and younger siblings taking advantage of this late summer into autumn sporting activity...which truly makes it a family event...and it does a heart good to see the new facilities provided by the local township to make this all possible...

Now, I love football, almost as much as I like baseball, and I and several of my kids have been involved in youth football over the years in a couple different organizations, but I must admit to you I've struggled seriously with the merits of allowing kids to engage in a sport which seems to expose children at a relatively young age to a higher level of body stress than nature intended...but, having said that, I have deferred to my kids wishes to participate and so they have...!

Again, there seems to be a healthy balance that is so challenging and elusive to master in life, that it occupies our every waking moment and desire to be great parents...that 'juggling act' I so often talk about!

I would personally like to thank Amity Township, Daniel Boone School District, and The Blazer Midget Football Organization and its volunteers for allowing so many children and families to engage in this fun and healthy activity...!

Amity Community Yard Sale

Yeah! The weather really cooperated on Saturday for the Amity Township Community yard sale that we sponsor yearly. I went around to the various houses and everyone seemed happy with what they sold. They told me the difference this year with the buyers was that they were buying up usable items instead of trinkets as they do in most years. It looks like the economy has filtered down to yard sales!

It was a great, busy day and alot of fun. If you're in the area next year about this time, ask about it. We had 225 homes last year and 226 home participating this year. Who knows how many next year? One thing is for sure - you can find just about anything at a reasonable cost!

Reflections Of A Powerless Title Guy...Day Two!!!

Fran 'The Title Man' Gaspari Title Insurance-PA & NJ : Title Company in Limerick, PA

Many of you who read my post yesterday know that my family and I had our power irresponsibly turned off by MET ED, our local power company that sells 'power' but not 'service'!!!

Briefly stated, we were never contacted by phone to inform us of the shutoff, even after we electronically paid our bill in full plus extras!!!

MET ED has demonstrated clearly that they could care less about their customers...their bottom line is all that is important...I wouldn't wan't to give them any more notoriety than they deserve...none!!!

What's it like to spend an evening with 5 kids under 14 and an irate wife???

Let me show you the ways!!!

I'll try to give them to you chronologically...

Left work a little early to 'calm the storm'...

Garage door opener doesn't work...and a 9 year old is not strong enough to lift a garage door up without power...even when chain is disabled!!!

Kids can't flush the toilets...well, only once...we are supplied water by well...no power, no water!

No one can wash their hands...same reason...

It's getting dark...break out the candles, the oil lamp, and try to get homework done before nightfall!!! One child had a paper do...which he could not complete...neither computer nor printer enabled to operate without power!!!

Younger children displayed fear in their voices and countenances...MET ED could probably care less!!! "Will we ever have power again?", they fearfully asked!!!

Family assembled to discuss the plan as we watched everything in the refrigerator and freezer melt and get ready to spoil...does MET ED care???...I doubt it!!!

Briefed children about use of flashlights, conserving energy and batteries, getting to bed early, and what to do upon rising and preparing for school...reassured children power would be back on by the time they got back home from school as promised by the MET ED contact...hopefully a 'local' body and not one of those 'offshore' talking boxes!!!

Slept well...briefly caught the Flyer's score and Phillies wrap up on my battery operated radio...

No shower, no shave...couldn't even find my 'backup' electric razor...probably wouldn't have been charged anyway...

Looking forward to getting to work early where we have power, heat, and water!!! Serviced by PECO Energy...never a problem in 40 years of continuous service!!!

And thank God for two things...Wipey Dypes and Anti bacterial waterless hand cleaner!!!

And here is what the Pa. P.U.C. says: "The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission balances the needs of consumers and utilities to ensure safe and reliable utility service at reasonable rates; protect the public interest; educate consumers to make independent and informed utility choices; further economic development; and foster new technologies and competitive markets in an environmentally sound manner."

I wonder which utility company wrote that???
