It seems as though the spread of the N1H1 Virus has everyone on edge. Just a few days ago President Obama declared swine flu a national emergency. As of Monday Geisinger Hospital will change its visiting practices. Other area hospitals such as Pocono Medical Center have also taken this initiative.

Geisinger Health System will begin screening visitors and restricting entrance with hope that doing so will help to limit the spread of both the H1N1 Virus as well as the seasonal flu. The new restrictions will apply to those experiencing fever with cough or sore throat as well as children 12 and under.

I don't know if any of this is really going to do much good. Just 3 weeks ago I was visiting at the hospital. On both the way in and the way out I noticed the entire waiting room was full to capacity. Most of the people waiting to be seen in the ER were displaying flu like symptoms. Although I agree that it's a good idea not to have someone with the flu running all over the hospital the truth is that we are more likely to catch the flu while visiting someone already there.

Now that the heating season is approaching several areas of concern arise. The main one being carbon monoxide exposure. The best way to approach this potential problem is by having your fuel burning heat source serviced at least once a year. This service should not only be for cleaning, but also determine proper operation and a carbon monoxide test should be performed. This service is offered by many local HVAC contractors and is rather inexpensive for having proactive maintenance to your system.

Protecting your Family

Since I've been on the suject of health care lately I'd like to take a few moments to tell everyone about Dr. Stephen M. Lawrence DMD. I found the good doctor on the Internet after I ran search on Google for emergency dental care. I called his office and was surprised that his recording gave out his cell phone number for those calling after hours and in pain. I called back at 8:30 and got a very friendly helpful person who was able to take my son in at 10:00 Am that very day. Okay, I couldn't get from my house to his office in time; we made an appointment for the following day at 9:00Am.

Upon arriving at his office I was surprised to find a bright, cheery happy atmosphere with soft chairs, soft music and color TV sets. The staff was very warm and friendly. I was handed a page to fill out front and back. There were the standard questions on the front, signatures on the back and only one sheet. So far this was working for me. After handing back the sheet and having the info put into the computer my son had to sit and wait. The wait was under 10 minutes.

They took him to another room for what I wasn't sure yet. 15 minutes later one of Dr. Lawrence's assistants came to get me. She took me back in the room with my son, showed me the x-rays, explained the options with prices and told me what my son had said he wanted done. The only question was whether or not I would give them permission to pull the tooth as opposed to performing a root canal. No pressure, no sales pitch, just my consent being he is a minor.

I left the room, Dr. came in and numbed my son's mouth, came into the waiting room and smiled at my husband and me. It almost felt like he was saying it was all going to be fine ... relax. He keyed some information into the computer and left. In the mean time his assistant came out to explain what they where doing and to go over the post op. care with us. She had already explained it all to my son, but wanted to be sure we knew as well. 10 -15 minutes later my son came back to the waiting room with a smile. He was no longer in any form of pain and ready to go home.

In by 9:00 out by 10:00 and billed only $223.00, which included the extra strength Motrin pills he gave us in case of pain. I'm a fan and Dr. Lawrence is our new family dentist. Seriously folks, if you're looking for good, quality affordable dentistry in the Pocono area, give the Doc. a call.
