Pump up the Oompah! The Man Who Would be Polka King is an irreverent look at the rise and fall of Grammy-nominated polka music superstar Jan Lewan, whose defection from Poland to the West in the 1970s led to fame, fortune and an international Polka Empire. But when Lewan's empire collapsed under a cloud of scandal, the polka world was stunned to learn of the greatest polka-related financial crime in history. 570-628-4647 http://www.sovereignmajestic.com

Jan's official website is an interesting one: http://www.janlewandowski.com/

One interesting quote from his website trouches on his financial crimes (which was called a Polka Ponzi Puzzle by the NY Post):

"On January 26, 2001, a terrible accident happened with my band, on the way to Florida for six concerts. Two of my musicians, Tommy Karas and John Stabinsky, were killed and my son Daniel severely injured. This accident along with 9/11, the crash of the stock market and wrongfully taking investment from other states lead into the prison. I served my time with dignity and respect to the law. For all these things that happened, I am very sorry for my family and for the people who were hurt over this. I can only pray now that I'll be able to come back strong and healthy to perform again, travel again, make recordings again and to be able to take care of my family and friends. So we all can be happy again."

In 1995 the Jan Lewan Orchestra was nominated for a Grammy award. Interesting stuff... if you're into polkas and the Coal Region of Pennsylvania!

I have not been to a GCE concert in quite a while, but I have always enjoyed their music.

The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, a professional and self-managed piano quartet, is now celebrating its 20th season of chamber music performances in Central Pennsylvania. Named after Gabriel Fauré for its exceptional rendition of the composer's piano quartets, the Ensemble has delighted its audiences not only with traditional works but also with works by Ornstein, Widor, Strauss, Saint-Saens - a list of about 120 composers. All in all, a repertoire of over 350 classical pieces!!!!
