Get Ready Pittsburgh - Winter Weather is Coming!

Jim Dolanch - Peters Township Real Estate: Real Estate Agent in Mc Murray, PA

Our recent experience with "balmy" 50 and 60 degree weather is about to leave us. With that said, now is a good time to be thinking about taking measures so your home is protected from "Old Man Winter's" blast. If you happen to be a one of those "snowbirds" who fly South for the warmer climates and leave your Pittsburgh home vacant for weeks possibly months at a time, here are a few timely suggestions to help prevent a disaster while you're away.

Avoid Frozen Pipes in Your Pittsburgh Home

Frozen water in pipes can cause water pressure buildup between the ice blockage and the closed faucet at the end of a pipe. If situation occurs pipes will burst at their weakest point. Areas most vulnerable include pipes in attics, crawl spaces and outside walls. These pipes are vulnerable to freezing in extremely cold weather where holes in your house’s outside wall for television, cable or telephone lines allow cold air to reach them.

To keep water in pipes from freezing, it is recommended you take the following steps:

  1. Fit exposed water pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping to slow the heat transfer. The more insulation the better.
  2. Seal all cracks and holes in exterior walls and foundations near water pipes with caulking or insulation.
  3. Keep interior cabinet doors open during cold spells to allow warm air to circulate around pipes (particularly in the kitchen and bathroom). Allow faucets to drip a slow trickle of water to pipes that run through an unheated or unprotected space in your crawl space. Another alternative is to drain the water system, especially if your house will be vacant during cold periods.
