Devastating Fire in Gettysburg Colt Park Neighborhood - Are you Adequately Insured
Earlier this week the Colt Park neighborhood of historic Gettysburg Pa suffered a devastating fire in one of the many beautiful homes that make up the neighborhood. As is clear from the accompanying pictures the structure is a total loss. That got me to thinking about friends and family as well as my own liabilities. When you see devastation on the level that this property suffered you hope that if this occurred to you, you would be prepared. I guess the word is insured because I don't believe that a fire of this magantude one could possibly be prepared for. Of course there are things that we can all do to make a situation like this (if we should be unfortunate enough to have to deal with) make the situation easier to deal with. Always check that your insurance coverage is adequate to cover any loss that may occur. You may be covered, but is the replacement cost gonna get you a new home, or are you gong to be short?

Take a look at the vehicles in the driveway, is your insurance adequite to cover loss to vehicles?

Situations like this make you think, while we are all "covered". does that mean that we can REPLACE what we have come to know and love as home?
The best news regarding this fire is that two students that just happened to be passing by, saved the owner and tenant in the home, and nobody was hurt, still what of the owners "life" was lost in this fire. Fires are devastating whether you are injured or not, take care of business and do the right thing, yeah it is time consuming and work, but you will be able to recover from something as a home fire just that much quicker if you do.

Gettysburg’s Colt Park Neighborhood Teems with History

Visiting the neighborhood of Colt Park in Gettysburg Pennsylvania one would not know how much the neighborhood is steeped in history. The actual ground sits on the edge of the historic Bliss farm, and was where Generals Pettigrew and Trimble commanded troops during the battle of Gettysburg. The housing development sits on the edge of the Gettysburg National Military Park.

The neighborhood is named for Camp Colt, which was established in 1917 as a training camp for the new U.S. Army Tank Corps during World War I. The camp included barracks, workshops, and firing ranges. At that time approximately 15,000 men trained with two French tanks under the command of Captain Dwight D. Eisenhower. This was Eisenhower’s first independent command and he was tasked with “taking in volunteers, equip, organize, and them”. Talk about humble beginnings! Eisenhower’s dedicated service at Camp Colt earned him the Distinguished Service Medal. The camp encompassed the ground from where the development now sits to the base of Big Round Top. The camp is commemorated by an evergreen tree and marker placed in the approximate location of the camps headquarters.
During World War II the area was home to a camp with a very different purpose. For six months during 1944 the area was home to 300 German prisoners of war. The prisoners were used as laborers completing many different tasks such as cutting and milling lumber to picking and processing fruit from the surrounding orchards.

Any trace of either of these two camps no longer exists, and the ground is now home to the development as well as the surrounding fields return to agricultural use.

While strolling through the peaceful sidewalks of Gettysburgs Colt Park neighborhood it is hard to believe all that history occurred on the ground that makes up the neighborhood.
