Pepperwood Grill's Grand ReOpening in Greensburg,PA takes place tonight!Grand Opening

Decisions, decisions. There are so many wonderful options for us here in central Westmoreland County to enjoy fine foods, great wines, and fun entertainment. And of course on every Friday night during the summer we are treated to Summersounds Concerts In The Park at St. Clair Park in Greensburg. Tonight the Concert features Hayes Carll as he brings his colorful brand of character-driven Texas country to Western PA. A good place to be - in the shade on the hillside, drinking in the scenes and sounds. Bring you friends, your family and your dogs. Chill out with a picnic supper! A welcome spot for all.

But tonight is also a very special night for Greensburg's Pepperwood Grille to shine as it shows off its brand new bar and patio scene. Eagerly awaited for the last few months, owners Pete and Michelle Wast will not only be welcoming folks to the new bar spaces but also introducing their new menu as well. Some incredibly tasty items await your pleasure.Pepperwood Bar

I am particularly fond of the seared Ahi, the tenderloin bites wrapped in bacon, the handmade veggie spring rolls, the pure Jamison Farm Lamburgers and so many other temptations. Enjoy many fine specialty brews on tap or sample the new wine list. And if you are really into wine, explore the new Reserve Selections list featuring such wonderful wines as Hartford Court "Land's Edge Pinot Noir, Frog's Leap Cabernet Sauvignon and Shafer "Relentless" Syrah. All a welcome addition to the local wine scene.

Come on out tonight - before or after the Concert In The Park and join the party! The Flow Band will be bringing their incredible blend of calypso, reggae and jazz to entertain us all. Party on till the wee hours!

SOME WONDERFUL RESTAURANT OPTIONS IN GREENSBURG, PA

One ElevenA couple nights ago I visited my son Erik (my real estate partner and sometime bartender) at One Eleven and "forced myself" to enjoy a glass of an extraordinary Ridge Vineyards Paso Robles Zinfandel while I waited for their new featured appetizer Pizzette! Crusty crust of flour and cornmeal drenched in olive oil and fresh garlic and delicately grilled then slathered with fresh cut sauteed sweet onions, layered with fresh spinach and then topped with shaved parmesean and provolone and fired in a super hot oven to crisp. Bring your appetite - this is an appetizer built for kings to savor. And like most selections at One Eleven the portion is very large - this is definately for two! And that Zin is a perfect pairing! My current vote for the best apPepperwoodp in town.

So then I moved to the Pepperwood Grille where my son Jonathan (also my real estate partner and a sometime Bartender) brought me what HE said was the best - Firecracker Grilled Shrimp. They call it flash fried baby tiger shrimp in a chile aioli. For me there is more than a hint of Louisiana remoulade and that is enough to make my palate savor the delight for sure. Just a light hint of crunchiness - most definately not fried shrimp; a spiciness that grabs the taste buds firmly but delicately. It cries out for a German Riesling Kabinett! I only wish there was one to be had.

Stay tuned for more tidbits from the local food and wine scene. I know there are more really fine appetizers out there for me to sample and I really look forward to the challenge! My guess is my favorites will keep changing for sure!

Lots of folks tend to think that they have to go the "big city" for great food and wine. Nothing could be further from the truth - as the success of these venues illustrates. And there are lots more as well - Solstice, J.Corks, and The Supper Club are just some of the recent additions to the local scene.

More to come on these and other long-established, fine restaurants for an evening of culinary and oenological treats! Support your local restauranteurs! Home grown and owned is always better!

We are blessed in our region to have access to the world-renowned UPMC Children's Hospital to care for our children in medical crisis. But the families of many children, both here and afar, often do not have the medical insurance or resources to take advantage of this incredible institution. The Hospital's Free Care Fund is a primary source of assistance for these families.Howard Hanna Greensburg Chow Chow

Each year our company, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, and Howard Hanna Agents and Offices throughout Western PA devote incredible energy, talent, time and personal resources in developing and holding fund raising events in each of our local communities.

Howard Hanna calls these Events the Chow Chow Express and each fall our "train" rolls into a community near you. To date we have raised over $5 million to help those families in need of critical care.

Nothing is finer than seeing a healthy smile on the face of a young child. Contact a Hanna Agent or Office in your neighborhood about attending an event. Our own Express Event is next Wednesday, 17 November from 4 till 7. Come give a donation. Enjoy some great food. Win a prize. Meet new friends and re-connect with old ones. Most of all - help us help the children.

Don't wait. Call today.

Halloween History & HallowBoo at Idlewild Park

Classic Halloween CardHallowe'en, a Scottish contraction of the term All Hallows Evening is a rather ancient tradition with both pagan and Christian roots. In the Celtic tradition it represents a fall festival called Samhain, denoting the end of "longer days" and the commencement of "darker days". It was thought that at this breakpoint in seasonal cycles the barriers between the living and spirits worlds became "thin". Lighting of bonfires and donning of masks were thought to protect one by warding off less kindly spirits.

In the Christian tradition the feasts, festivals and religious celebrations of All Saints Day, and the following All Souls Day, celebrate not only the memory of the Saints and their deeds and spiritual impact, but also a spritual communion between those who have died and are in a "state of grace" and the living who pray for intercession. The date of the celebrations originally fell in Springtime annually but during the Papacy of Gregory in the mid 8th century the date was moved to November.

Perhaps that was coincidence, but the new date for the Christian celebration fell on or about the same time as the Irish (Celtic) festival of Samhain. This was also the time of the ancient Roman fall harvest festival called Lemuria which, also coincidentally, was a time for ameliorating the troublesome spirits of the dead.

Hmmmm. Is there a connection here? Does a pattern emerge? Whatever your religious or spiritual background, it seems there is a melding of traditions here. Being a tolerant sort of person I do welcome all faiths and traditions here in our own American melting pot. It is what has made America the wonderful polyglot society of free people that we are. God - or the gods willing - we will remain just that.

Fall MarketIn any event all these ancient traditions have come down over the last millenium or two to what we have in North America today. A truly fun and very special Holiday for kids to celebrate with unending creativity. Games, parties, costumes, crisp fall air, families out walking the neighborhoods, neighbors getting re-acquainted. Much to celebrate!

And here at home, at Idlewild Park in Ligonier PA, one of the oldest and most loved amusement parks in America, the Park pays annual homage to the Halloween season with the return of HallowBoo at Idlewild. Don't forget to bring your young children or grandchildren to this wonderful and safe celebration. This is the last weekend coming up - Open Noon till six.

Enjoy!!
