I had an enjoyable afternoon today showing homes (until I went to Panera's for lunch - that's another story) to a couple who are first time homebuyers. They've been sitting on the fence for a while - probably at least a year - but I think the new tax credit might have sparked their interest. They are finally out looking at homes and not just talking about it!
We saw a great Lancaster City home for sale, which had some fantastic features. Tall ceiling, gorgeious hardwood everywhere, an updated kitchen, pocket doors - you all know the type - a typical turn of the century Victorian in Lancaster City. It was really beautiful, and probably on the top of their list for now. It lacked a few things that they'd really like to have, and so I told them to take their time and think it over. There are things that you can change in some homes, and some things that you can't change. This home could not accomodate off-street parking, which would be important to them.
As a contrast, we took a look at a detached home for sale in Grandview Heights in Manheim Township. It was really in great shape and had a lot going for it ~ they just weren't "feeling" it like they did the old victorian. Clearly, there are huge differences in design, although this unique home was priced right and had a lot to offer for a tree-lined street along one of Manheim Township's favorite neighborhoods.
All in all, it was a great day ~ until lunch time at Panera's. Usually one of my favorite places to grab a "U Pick 2" for lunch, the poor girl at the order taking station must have been new at the job. She messed up the order of the people ahead of me. Messed up my husband's order - and messed up mine the worst! I take pity when it's a young person who is clearly new at their job, so I didn't make a stink about it. It was tasty, just not quite what I had ordered - a Smokehouse Turkey panini and a salad. Instead, I got a cold turkey sandwich. At least she got the salad right! The lady on line before me was making a big fuss - it just isn't worth the effort and I wouldn't let it ruin my day.
I came home to take a nice long afternoon nap on the couch with one of my favorite puppies.
A great way to wrap up a Sunday!

By the end of the year, folks driving to the Lancaster Airport might be saying:
"Look, it's a bird! It's a plane! No... its the new Garber Scale and Calibration building!"
Manheim Township commissioners this week approved plans for the new $3.5 million multi-use facility that Garber Scale plans on building on Airport Road.
Why is this a big deal?
It shows that forward-thinking businesses are still pushing ahead in this economy. It also is a great example of how new construction, even in commercial and industrial zones such as this, can be environmentally friendly while taking advantage of the best use of land.
Garber Scale's new facility will include environmentally-friendly features such as:
A portion of the building will include self-storage facilities for rent, as well as additional office space for lease.
Employees will enjoy the roof-top views from the verandas, a perfect spot to watch the take-offs and landings from the nearby airport, or can use the employee exercise room and lounge.
While other firms are looking at layoffs and are closing facilities, it's exciting to see a local company include environmentally friendly features as they grown their business outlook.

Did you Know?
The Manheim Township Police Department has a "Tip Line" for residents to call and report any suspected criminal activity -- 717-569-2816 -- can be called 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It is completely anonymous, as the police department is aware that some people would not want to reveal themselves or might feel reluctant to tell police about any criminal activity that they are aware of.
The Tip Line allows residents to get involved without involving themselves and without fear of the criminals finding out who they are.
This call goes directly to an answering maching, and there is NO Caller ID!
Callers should leave a detailed message about why they are calling, names of the people involved (if known), what is occuring and where.
Dates and times are helpful as well, if known.
Any other information that the caller feels would be helpful should be left on the recorder.
The Tip Line is not to be used by someone needing an immediate response from the police department.
If you are having an emergency, as always you should call 911. Non emergency calls should go to 664-1180.
If you would like to be kept up to date about any traffic emergencies or criminal activity in Manheim Township, sign up for Crime and Traffic Alerts at www.ManheimTownship.org and click on "Alerts".

You can read about Day 1 here.
The 12 Days of Listing
(Your Home for Sale in Lancaster)
Do you have a Home for Sale in Lancaster County, or one that you are thinking of Listing for sale within the next few weeks? I've been getting into a holiday mood, and thought it might be helpful if I shared my rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas as The 12 Days of Listing -- or -- How to Prepare Your Lancaster Home for Sale in 12 days! Click Here to See Day 1 of the First Day of Listing Your Lancaster Home.

2. On the 2nd Day of Listing (your Lancaster home):
Clean out your cabinets! Yes, you know those dark, scary corners under the bathroom sink? It's time to get rid of the case of soap bars that you have stuffed in your bathroom vanity cabinet. You know the ones -- the ones you bought on sale only to find you've had an allergic reaction to them. No, the buyers won't want them either. And the dried up tube of anti-itch medication you‘ve kept just in case you used that soap again? Ditch that too.
Cleaning under the kitchen sink. Yes, you can plan on getting rid of the tons of grocery plastic bags you've been tossing under there for the past 3 years, just in case you need them. Nobody need 50 plastic grocery bags. How about reusing them the next time you go grocery shopping! That's a much better idea than ditching them. No, the new buyers won't want these either, so no excuses!
You know those "junk drawers" so stuffed you can hardly open them? You guessed it. Time to get crackin' and pry them open and dump them out! You think buyers won't look in there? You're wrong. They will, and they might even rummage through them! Of course it's not because they're nosey, it's because they need to see if there really is a drawer under all that stuff! Plus, they need to evaluate if it will hold all of their junk. Time to toss the magic markers that no longer work, time to ditch the bent paper clips you've been saving "just in case". Hey wait!! Is that my Business Card magnet in there? Why is it in your "junk drawer?" Okay, I'll over look it for now. But just this one time!
You want your cabinets and drawers to look organized, clean and spacious. This is much more important than you might realize!
Check back tomorrow for Day 3 of "The Twelve Days of Listing"

I recently posted about a family member of mine who had a sudden heart attack. It was a shock to us all, but luckily he is recuperating well after having an emergency quadruple bypass surgery. I appreciate everyone’s concern and patience while I was gone for about a week to help take care of my family’s needs.
It was also a wake up call that I’m probably not as young as I think I am or feel, and that I along with the rest of my family need to really start listening to our bodies. My mother suffers from heart disease, and now that my brother in law had a heart attack I’ve realize that this is not just something that happens to my parents’ generation.
So, I started doing some research and thought I would share some websites and information that I found:
Please note that this is not intended to be medical advice, and if you suspect a heart condition you should seek the advice of your medical professional.
Take care of your heart ~ it is the only one you have! Study the symptoms and warning signs of a heart attack, as they can vary from person to person. It’s not always a sudden clutching of the heart and chest pain, and very often can be something as mild as sweating, nausea, back pain or jaw pain, and numbing of the arms or legs. Pay attention to your body!
