Spring in is the Air I Smell the Ocean

There are sure tell tale signs that spring is coming. For the first time in months the pond isn't frozen, the temperature reached about 50 degrees and when I walked out the door I smelled the ocean. Other signs are telling me spring is right around the corner also.

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine went clamming and gave me some of the bounty. He is a brave soul he even clams in the winter and it can get real cold. The clams were so sweet and delicious. I did have to share them with my dog. Crazy thing she loves clams and raw quahogs. Thank you my friend.

We also had our first claim boil of the season. Think we are trying to get this spring thing on or what? Have you ever had a clam boil? It is one of the best one pot meals going. Basically you get potatoes, onions, hot dogs, sausage, chourice, and clams (maybe if you have been really good you put in some lobsters). Layer in a pot in that basic order spice with garlic, salt, pepper, crushed red pepper add a little water in the bottom of the pan and let it boil til the hot dogs plump and the clams open.

One last sign for me is no matter how warm a day I still have the heat in car on high. Even when I think to myself: Wow, I'm a little warm I don't turn it down. I can't wait to hear everyone complaining about how hot it is. We New Englanders love to complain about the weather. Part of our charm I guess.

So Spring is sneaking up on us and Summer will be here in a flash so this post is all about salt waterfront living in Newport County Rhode Island. I know we are the smallest state in the Union but we are not as small as one might think and when it comes to seaside fun there is a lot of ground to cover.

The Walk of a Lifetime

Cliffwalk in Newport, Rhode Island: The Walk of a Lifetime

To call it beautiful, majestic, enchanting, mesmerizing, unique, breathtaking, will still not do it justice. To call it the most beautiful walk of my life... somehow that describes it.

As the sun was setting on the cliffs of Rhode Island, bathing the gilded age mansions with an ephemeral surrealism, I could not believe I was as lucky as this: to see such grandeur is almost humbling. Where God meets man is an apt description for what I was looking at.

The 3.5 mile walk is a public right-of-way over private property. In spots just a couple of feet from the path are abrupt drops of over 70 feet. Wild bushes and weeds often hide this danger. On one side - the perilous cliffs, on the other, the gilded age mansions. You expect the Great Gatsby to walk out at anytime from any one of these amazing structures.

Here is the evidence humbly captured by my camera. If you think the pictures are captivating, you owe it to yourself to take this walk at dusk. Then, you too will understand that a mere camera can never aptly convey the remarkable story behind this enchanting place.

Not your typical newsletter.

Jackson Law, Ltd.

I am pleased to present the first edition of our Jackson Law, Ltd. monthly newsletter. When I first committed to the concept of connecting with our firm's clients and friends on a consistent basis through this media, I was a little hesitant about how this would all work. I personally receive a slew of newsletters from fellow professionals, and although most are informative, I must say that I know exactly what to pick up if I'm having any trouble falling asleep at night! The truth is, most newsletters from legal, financial and other professionals are technical and boring. This is because they are probably canned industry formatted newsletters that simply have the name of the firm slapped on the top. When I decided to move forward with this endeavor, I knew that we were going to do things differently. I figured I owed as much to my friends and clients that have been such an integral part of the success of the firm over the years. So you have my word that our monthly rag will be a true production of the firm, for better or worse.

With that being said, each month we will be including information and articles relating to the areas of law in which we consistently provide services. Hopefully we can look at a number of important national and local topics from a more personal perspective, to examine the impact these issues may have on you directly. Above all it is our intent to provide helpful, interesting, and at times amusing information, to keep you up to speed and well informed on a variety of topics. So each month, we hope that you read a little, learn a little, and always keep us in mind if we can be of assistance. - J. Russell Jackson. Esq.

The IRS Niche:

Dealing with the IRS can be a daunting and intimidating prospect for most people. In fact, many people who have tax issues with the IRS would probably prefer root canal over dealing with the IRS to get the problem resolved. Despite avoidance, procrastination, and wishful thinking on the part of many, tax problems don't go away by themselves.

This past October, I traveled to Denver to attend a two-day conference on IRS problem solving tactics. I look forward to continuing to hone my skills and represent clients in this growing practice area. I also look forward to providing great information in future newsletters about common problems and potential solutions when dealing with the IRS.
