Ann & Hope, is a privately held company, was founded by Martin (Marty) Chase, one of six sons, who was born in 1906 in Kiev, Ukraine and moved to Providence, RI with his family at the age of six. By reducing overhead he started Chase Clothing.
As World War II approached, the clothing market fell into decline, and Chase began to look for another line of work. In 1946, he purchased the Ann & Hope Mill complex in the village of Lonsdale at 1 Ann & Hope Way in Cumberland, Rhode Island 02864. He split the large, empty mill into several small pieces and rented them individually.

Some time before December 1953, one of the tenants left the Mill, leaving a large amount of ribbon behind. Rather than dispose of it, the Chases opened the area to the other employees of the Mill and sold the ribbon. Chase then had the idea to reopen a clothing store in the Mill, initially on the third floor. By the following spring, the operation had become large enough that it was relocated to the ground floor. and basement level. To get store patron's items from one floor to the other a special carriage lift was created and operated by staff, (This is still in the lower level and has not been removed)

Over time more products were added, and by 1969, Ann & Hope was a $40 million per year department store operation. Ann & Hope was one the first self-service department stores in which customers could look at items without sales personnel and also one of the first to use shopping carts in a department store.

On October 21, 2010 I decided "Enough was enough" I could not stand another bad hair day.
I called my favorite stylist and asked if she could fit me into her appointments and she so kindly accommodated me by saying, "come in at 6pm" She is so sweet.
As a regular client since 1995 I followed my favorite hair stylist as she relocated up the street to her new location from 127 Mendon Road
to 500 Mendon Road, Cumberland, RI into a modern facility in a
neighborhood strip mall that includes a nail salon and tanning /teeth
whitening salon. I am told almost all of her clients have followed her as well.
I told her I was coming in for a shampoo and cut and blowdry.

Ana Maria Hair Salon is "A Neighborhood Salon" that specializes in
haircuts for women, men and children, Perms and Coloring can be done, too. Ana Coimbra has been doing this for over 30 years.
On this long needed visit I had Ana cut my long hair since my last visit
in January. I could not take it any more I need that new lift, new style,
something that would allow me some freedom from managing long hair.
A style that would be casual but with a professional flair. So away she clipped and as the hair fell to the floor I sighed a relief and she remarked, "Kathleen, please don't wait so long!"

Ana used her tools to perform her new creation for me,

"Cumberland was originally settled as part of Rehoboth, Massachusetts,
which was purchased from the local Native Americans by the Plymouth
Colony. It was later transferred to Rhode Island as part of a long-running boundary dispute. The town was named in honor of Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. William Blackstone (also spelled William Blaxton in colonial times) was the first European to have settled and lived in Cumberland." My community of Lincoln is its neighbor.
