King Philip's War: RI & MA.

I've recently discovered and have become very absorbed in this piece of American History. This is an event that took place in 1675-1676 and was a war between the English Settlers and Native Americans. Statistically measuring in deaths per 100k and as a percentage of a population, this war was deadlier than the American Revolution, The Civil War and World War 2

I reside in the East Bay and am thrilled with the fact that this area is rich in historical sites that can be easily visited. I've always been aware of the presence of many places receiving their names from the Indian history in this area, examples, Wampanoag Trail, roads named after Metacom & Massasoit, and the town of Narragansett. What has me very excited is that with just a little bit of study all the events that happened over 300 years ago can come alive again in my imagination with how easy many of the significant sites can be visited.

I am currently reading a book titled King Philip's War, The History and Legacy of America's Forgotten Conflict by Schultz & Tougias. Along with presenting some great material to study this book also provides many maps and acts as a great guidebook to making it easy to locate and visit many points of interest.

Years ago I had visited Anawan Rock in Rehoboth MA out of curiosity of it being considered a haunted site. I will visit it again to also appreciate it being considered the spot in which this war had ended.

Among the sites I plan on visiting to learn more of this history is the historic area of Little Compton. There is a cemetery there where a notable person from this war is buried, Benjamin Church. Nine Men's Misery in Cumberland and a site in Central Falls which marks the beginning of this event.

I'm also discovering a new appreciation for the towns of Warren & Bristol because in the 1600's this was basically all Indian territory. Swansea Ma marks the town in which the war began and Tiverton and Little Compton where then know as Pocasset and Sakonnet who were the tribes that occupied this area.
