HAINT BLUE---A GULLAH TRADITION----BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN???

I'm not sure if you've ever heard the expression or terminology of "haint blue" but you'll hear it a lot if you are living in the South, especially in the areas where the Gullah heritage is evident. "Haint Blue" is an old Gullah belief that if folks painted their ceilings blue it would ward off the evil spirits. They also painted the areas around the windows and doorways (the trim) in the belief the evil spirits would stay away.

The Gullah's also believed that if they painted the ceilings blue, the insects would be fooled into thinking it was the blue sky and would stay away........Makes perfect sense to me.

But you might ask if there ACTUALLY IS a color called "Haint Blue." The answer to that is definitely not. The Gullah folks used whatever color or pigments they had available, thus one will see varying shades of blues ranging from sky blue to teals and darker shades.

We have Decorators in the Hilton Head and Bluffton area who use their signature color blue (depending on their tastes) and just call it "Haint Blue." It's very popular and accepted to see these colors used in Southern homes today.

Z Prather just became the newest agent to join the RE/MAX Sea Island Realty team in Beaufort South Carolina. Z was first licensed in 1986 and will be moving over from Weichert Realtors, APEX Realty to RE/MAX Sea Island Realty today 10/1/08. Z's real name is Zofia and she is of Polish decent. She speaks 3 languages; English, Polish, and Russian. Z worked for RE/MAX Sea Island Realty earlier in her real estate career, so it was a logical choice for Z when she decided to work her real estate business full-time again. We are all so excited about having such a seasoned real estate Broker on our team!

Have you ever seen an ad describing a home as being sold in "as is" condition and wondered what it all meant? Simply, it means the seller is making NO GUARANTEE as to the condition of the home!

Years ago it used to be that the doctrine of "caveat emptor" prevailed and the buyer had no protection but no longer does that apply. When a seller makes no guarantee this means that he/she will make no repairs BUT STILL HAS AN OBLIGATION TO DISCLOSE ANY KNOWN DEFECTS.

If you, as a buyer, encounter an "as is" sale, proceed carefully. We often see this type of sale in our local Hilton Head and Bluffton real estate market. Make certain your contract has a contingency clause predicated on a SATISFACTORY INSPECTION REPORT........one more bit of advice------Make certain you hire a CERTIFIED INSPECTOR who will carefully inspect the home for defects.

Hire an experienced Realtor and Attorney to guide you through the process.
