It's no big secret that consumers don't go out of their way to trust us Realtors. In fact most reports that I have read concerning consumer confidence rank us between attorneys and used car salesmen. Well, despite their own struggles with public perception, I know attorneys and used car salesmen that I like and trust.
As far as our issues are concerned, maybe it's time blame is placed where it belongs. It's our fault. No, it's not the fault of every Realtor that Realtors have a bad reputation where the public is concerned, but it is the fault of Realtors that the public no longer trusts us and many of them do not want to deal with us. There are simply too many of us that did not and do not do the job right.

The fact of the matter is there are all to many Realtors in this business who could care less about the well being of their clients. They could care less about ethics and they could care less actually representing their clients. The only thing they care about is their next commission check and how they are going to get.
These are the Realtors that will lie through their teeth and promise the impossible to get a listing or sign a buyer. They are out there and we all know it and so do the consumers. Most people who do not want to deal with Realtors have a very good reason for their animosity towards our profession. They have more than likely had a bad experience with one of the Realtors that I am talking about and now we are guilty by association.
Most of us know the importance of doing the job right and ensuring that our clients are happy. But we will suffer for the decisions made by less than moral agents just the same. We have to educate the public and change their perception of us. We have to make them comfortable with their decision to use our services. We have to accept that we are blame for their feelings to toward us and correct it.

Berkeley Forest Homes For Sale In Columbia SC
Back in 1969 this neighborhood sprang up on the outer edge of SE Columbia. Berkeley Forest was built in 4 phases if I remember correctly, and all the homes were sprawling solid brick ranches. For some reason back then the builders installed oak hardwood flooring in every home that was immediately covered with wall to wall carpet. And not just any carpet, either. SHAG carpet!! The kind that came in bright orange and green shades and had to be raked. (I'm not making this up)
The top two photos are of 3 bedroom, 2 bath homes listed for sale for $135,500 and $149,900
The bottom home, recently completely renovated has 2175 SF and is listed for sale at $165,000
This 3 bedroom, 2 bath home was built on a vacant lot in the neighborhood 30 years later and is listed for sale at $119,000
Berkeley Forest is located close to Fort Jackson and about 10 minutes from the Veterans Administration Hospital on Garners Ferry Road. Several new restaurants and shopping centers have been built in the area since 1969 and the neighborhood is no longer on the edge of civilization as Columbia has expanded.
