Heathwood Neighborhood Celebrates 100th Anniversary With Zoning Changes

Terry Edwards: Real Estate Agent in Columbia, SC

Columbia SC Tuesday evening Columbia City Council approved new zoning changes for Heathwood, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. After a developer recently tore down an old house in the Heathwood neighborhood and subdivided the land into home sites, stricter zoning standards have been adopted.

Heathwood homeowners will now need to get approval from Columbia's Design/Development Review Commission for all new construction. All new additions or enclosures visible from the road, including driveway work and demolitions, will now require approval. Permission by the Review Commission for general maintenance and repair work not visible from the road is not required.

The Whaley, Sherwood Forest and Shandon neighborhoods have already adopted these zoning standards.

The Hollywood-Rose Hill Neighborhood Association will have an election to vote on similar zoning changes Monday, April 11 from 4-7 PM at the Rose Hill Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on Saluda Avenue.

Columbia, SC This past week homeowners in the Heathwood neighborhood of Columbia voted to prohibit the demolition of homes built prior to the 1960s. The zoning change is known as Interim Measures For Community Protection. However, approval can still be made for demolition when granted by Columbia's development review commission.

City Council will next vote on the measure at the zoning hearing on November 19th.
