Shandon, which encompasses Olde Shandon as well, is a very popular downtown neighborhood in Columbia, South Carolina’s state capital. This neighborhood is bordered by Devine Street, Rosewood Street, Harden Street, and Kilbourne Road.
Shandon is a historic neighborhood that originated as a farm and then became Columbia’s race track. The area began as a suburban town in 1891 and as the street cars in the area expanded, new residents were brought in and the neighborhood blossomed. By 1913, Shandon was officially annexed into the city of Columbia. Shandon was the place to live at the turn of the century, much like the way it is now!
With such a long history, Shandon is a neighborhood with a style of its own. You won’t see the typical gated entrance or community clubhouse, but as you enter the neighborhood you will be sure to see children playing on the wide streets, families taking an evening stroll, runners or walkers enjoying the beautiful blooming azaleas and dogwoods, and a neighborhood that overall radiates a friendly open atmosphere. Even though this is a multigenerational community with residents of all ages, neighbors can easily relate to each other as each homeowner takes extreme pride in their home.
There are a wide variety of homes in Shandon, including condos, townhouses, quads, garden homes, and luxury homes. Many of the homes were built in the 1920′s to 1940′s but have been renovated to include new home features in an old world charm. Although there is architectural variety, Shandon homes have a style of their own.
Shandon has a very active neighborhood council which meets to discuss neighborhood projects, issues of concern, and to plan events. Each year the council hosts two fundraising events to raise money for their projects and for neighborhood schools. The Home for the Holidays tour of homes is held each December and the Shandon Turkey Trot is held each November.
Residents attend award winning Richland County District 1 Schools including A.C. Moore Elementary or Rosewood Elementary School, Hand Middle School, and Dreher High School.
Character and charm isn’t the only thing that makes this neighborhood so appealing, it’s also its amazingly convenient location. Residents can easily walk or bike to shops, parks, and restaurants. The nearby Five Points district and Devine Street are just minutes away on foot and have great boutiques, cafes, delicious restaurants, and bars with lots of personality. Recent revitalization has helped expand the nearby vibrant Congaree Vista area which is known for having 60 art galleries and specialty shops as well as 40 restaurants and bars.
Columbia also has a broad array of cultural events and performances throughout the year. The Koger Center and the Colonial Life Arena host a wide variety of artists and performers throughout the year including Broadway shows, the Ringling Brothers Circus, Cirque de Soleil and much more. Some of Columbia most recognized annual cultural events include the South Carolina State Fair, the World Beer Festival, and the Rosewood Crawfish Festival to name a few.
For outdoor recreation, Shandon residents can venture to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden or the River walk parks. The Congaree National Park, South Carolina’s only national park, is just minutes away and a beautiful place for canoeing, bird watching, camping, hiking. Lake Murray is a quick 30 minute trip and a perfect “outdoor playground” where you can explore the outdoors with kayaking, boating, swimming, fishing, and much more!
