Diane Bell, Hilton Head Real Estate, Bluffton : Real Estate Agent in Hilton Head Island, SC

It's probably true that only a special breed of folks live on Dafuskie Island. Known for it's laid back atmosphere and total tranquility, the only thing you need to resolve if you decide to live on Dafuskie is "just how do I get there?" You see, Dafuskie is ONLY accessible by boat. Yes, no bridges and with that comes some special limitations----like what about when you forget milk and bread? Nope, you just can't hop in your car and run to the corner store. You either wait for the regularly scheduled Dafuskie Island ferry or you utilize your own boat to travel over to Hilton Head Island.

I thought it might be interesting to list a few little known facts about Dafuskie:

  • Indians inhabited Dafuskie nearly 10,000 years ago.
  • The Spanish arrived in the 1500's when Dafuskie was still considered part of Florida
  • Plantations started in the 1600's and 1700's
  • The earliest crop was Indigo, followed later by Cotton.
  • The Union Forces occupied Dafuskie until 1865.
  • After the war, the island was mostly inhabited by freed slaves.
  • The culture of the freed slaves became known as the Gullah Culture.
  • By 1920, the Boll Weevil wiped out the cotton crops.
  • Most residents left during the 1930's (depression era).
  • Pat Conroy's best seller--The Water is Wide, is a story about Dafuskie Island.
