I have not been to Hilton Head for a while. But we are here for a much needed rest. Here are some observations. The place is wonderful and the people very nice. There has been an awful lot of building since the last time I was here. I cannot help but think a little less development would make the island even more attractive. However if you are looking for a nice spot to spend some time this is a great place.

This time of year you are not going swimming. But for golf and tennis as well as hiking you could not ask for better weather. So depending on what you like to do Hilton head is a fun place to be with a lot of choices

Port Royal Plantation - Hilton Head Island

Port Royal is a cultured and gracious plantation on Hilton Head Island South Carolina. It is the only private Oceanside planned residential community on Hilton Head, designed solely for residents and their guests’ enjoyment. Plantation residents have access to quiet beaches without commercial infringement or condo rentals inside the gates. It was the second plantation developed on the island and is located along the northeastern curve of the island, bordering Port Royal Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. It is conveniently located to the Hilton Head Airport as well as the public schools and the Hilton Head Hospital.

Once you enter the elegant guard-gated entrance, you will note the varying residential style choices of Port Royal Plantation—the refined homes, cottages, and condominiums. There are approximately 900 single-family homes, with home sites ranging in size from ¼ acre to well over an acre.

With miles of bicycling and jogging leisure paths, several outdoor pools, a heated indoor pool and a private beach pavilion, Port Royal’s secluded shores are prime mid-island real estate on Hilton Head Island. This plantation’s pristine beaches, three championship golf courses and the award-winning tennis complex of the Port Royal Racquet Club--with 16 tennis courts--make it the ideal resort for both beach rentals and a place to call home on Hilton Head. Its tall hedges, swaying palms and refined lifestyle, endear Port Royal to residents and visitors alike.

History buffs might be interested in the fact, also, that the bluffs of Port Royal Plantation were first sighted by Spanish Captain Pedro de Quexos in 1521, and claimed later by English Captain William Hilton in 1663. Hence, the name of our island.

The present Port Royal Plantation was occupied by Confederate forces at the start of the Civil War, but were defeated in the Battle of Port Royal in 1861, whereupon 13,000 Union troops took control of Hilton Head Island. Historical markers at Fort Walker Park, the Beach House and the Steam Gun describe events that took place here and in the surrounding waters.
