The Heritage is Tradition

As an Islander the Heritage is about an Island, it's a celebration of spring, it is azaleas blooming, suntans, happy people and living in the Low Country. It has become bigger than a great PGA golf tournament at the Harbour Town Golf Links. The tournament has given everyone of us something to be proud of, something to be grateful for, something to share and celebrate and it belongs here on Hilton Head Island. As the President of the Hilton Head MLS, I often have the pleasure of meeting with some of the Island's most forward thinking business persons, responsible for making Hilton Head what it is today. At the October meeting of the Hilton Head MLS members, I had the pleasure of introducing Bill Wagner, Director of Sales for the Heritage Golf Tournament.

The 2011 Tournament will be held April 18 - 24 and will carry a purse of $ 5.7 million. This will be the 43^rd playing of this tournament since its beginning in 1969. The Heritage has always been vital to the economy of South Carolina and according to a recent Clemson University study; last year was responsible for bringing $ 81 million into the State. The overall expected crowd for the 2011 tournament is estimated to be 135,000.

Verizon Business has had a long standing relationship with The Heritage Golf Tournament but last year decided to "broaden their horizons" by sponsoring a number of golfing events instead of focusing on Harbour Town. Since losing the Title Sponsor, the director of the tournament, Steve Wilmot, has worked hard to ensure we have the 2011 Heritage will happen and he has the town of Hilton Head and many South Carolina politicians behind him. It is a go!

Now it will be Wilmot's and Wagner's responsibility to find a new major sponsor, or as many as 6 "mini major" sponsors for 2012 and beyond. Last year The Hilton Head MLS purchased a tent on the 18^th fairway and Bill Wagner came to our meeting to invite us to participate again. All of the members seemed to be happy to see him and showed great interest in further participation.

The Hilton Head MLS serves 8 counties in the Hilton Head area and offers state of the art systems to its members and the public alike.
