Lake Murray, SC

Just a quick explanation- These pictures were taken at Lake Murray in Lexington, SC the day of the Lake Murray Dam Swim. My wife and several members of her swim team swam in the event and everyone finished. The event was a lot of fun and helped raise money for a great cause. Myself and a client were there to support our swimmers and cheer everyone on.

Lake Murray SC fishing Report September 2009

Laura Jefferson: Real Estate Agent in Columbia, SC

Lake Murray SC fishing Report September 2009

  • Bream: Very good. Bream have moved deeper into 4-8 feet of water around rocks and docks. Use baby nightcrawlers for shellcracker and crickets for bluegill. For bluegill use crickets and for shellcracker fish sections of nightcrawlers or troll slowly throwing jigs for a mixed bag.
  • Striped Bass: Good. The keeper ratio continues to improve and striper are suspended from 40-80 feet deep in the area from Shull Island down to the dam. Live herring fished on down lines are the most popular bait but cut herring fished on the bottom in 45 to 60 feet are also working. There is also a fair amount of success reported trolling in 30-40 feet of water with Road Runners and jigs. Usually schooling will start towards the first of September.
  • Largemouth Bass:Slow to fair. The recent summer night tournament series was won by an angler jigging a large 5 inch spoon off the bottom around bait schools in about 18 feet of water. Catches have generally been down and the shallow bite has been off. The most consistent area of the lake remains up the river and up creeks, particularly early in the morning around gator grass. By 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. that bite generally falls off. Plastic worms in red shad and red junebug have been popular.
  • Crappie: Fair to good. Crappie fishing remains fairly strong over deep brush in 15-20 feet of water using small minnows.
  • Catfish: Excellent. The Lake Murray catfish bite is on fire and lots of 2 to 8 pound channel and blue catfish are being caught fishing with cut herring and nightcrawlers in the shallows all over the lake down to 20 feet. Try lake and island points.
  • Saluda River Trout. Fair. The striped bass have dined on what the fisherman havent caught. Striped bass. Excellent. The big boys are up in the cooler tailrace.Use herring and drift fish. Keep in mind you cant keep any till September 30. Smallmouth Bass: very Good jigs and lures in the rocks around shoals. Water flow has been high at times so check SCEG flows before going.

Lake Murray SC fishing is still a great family fun destination in Lexington South Carolina.

The annual SC dove season opener is this Saturday September 5TH. This is a southern tradition and can be great fun with elaborate spreads and great fellowship.

The SC deer season is well underway and there has been some nice bucks already taken with rumors of several state qualifiers in velvet. The upstate opener is still to come.
