Moncks Corner's Lake Moultrie

Michael Johnson, REALTOR - Goose Creek SC: Real Estate Agent in Goose Creek, SC

On the outer edge of the Charleston metropolitan is the town of Moncks Corner SC. The steady increase in growth to Moncks Corner over the years is primarily due to Lake Moultrie and its surrounding sportsman's paradise. Lake Moultrie is a 60,300 acre man made lake. Its perimeter stretches 135 miles and it is known for its wildlife to include its abundantly large fish which have produced several world records. The lakes are maintained by Santee Cooper, a state run organization.

The lakes were originally used as far back as 1800 to transport goods from Columbia to Charleston. But, more recently in the 1930s & 1940s, the Santee Cooper project (federally funded and state owned) was started as a way of building dams in the lakes for hydroelectric power. Before the project 93% of the South Carolina population were without electricity but after its completion in 1942 people throughout South Carolina began to benefit from hydroelectic power, which today serves all 46 counties in one capacity or another.

There are several public boat ramps surrouning the lake for access as well as a diversion canal on the north side of the lake into Lake Marion (an additional 96,400 acre lake). The Pinopolis Lock system on the south side of the lake near Moncks Corner gives entry to the Trail Race Canal, which in turn leads to the Cooper River and out to Charleston Harbor, as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner, SC - A great day with nature!

Melissa Marro www.StagingAndRedesign.com www.RedesigningCharleston.com: Home Stager in Charleston, SC

Recently my family and I had the opportunity to spend some time together and decided to visit Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner. We rarely get the opportunity to do the touristy things, but because we do love nature, this seemed like a fun thing to do.

My oldest daughter has a soft spot for turtles, so she particularly enjoyed seeing all the turtles out sunning themselves....

If you go, definately take the canoe rides. It was wonderful and it was free. The tour guide we had was very knowledgable and quite humorous as well.... Here are some of the sites... the 3 legged alligator below

With all the fear of the disappearance of the bumble bees, it was great to see a living hive.... (the brown spots on the tree below)

There were also beautiful water lilies, and other flora which stood out beautifully on this black water swamp....

My youngest daughter enjoyed the butterfly exhibit the best....

uh... yeah.... that's not quite what I meant....

There were just hundreds of butterflies of different species flying around. I thought it was stunning myself....

Of course there were some scaley beasts in built in habits too....

If you get the chance to visit Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner (near Charleston), SC... DO! Plan for a relaxing time filled with nature. No stress, just lots of sun, water and mother nature!
