Normally, I would have skipped over this event only because prior to a few months ago, there was no one I knew who had experienced heart disease. However, that changed pretty quickly, when a dear friend attended one of these screenings and can now say her life was saved because she took the proactive stance of doing the Heart Screening. So, because of this, I cannot recommend this event more wholeheartedly.

FEE IS $20--A SMALL SUM FOR PEACE OF MIND.

Okatie Village development was recently approved by Beaufort county. However, there are details which the county wants ironed out before this goes forward. Okatie Village will reflect the new urbanism where "towns" are created around schools, jobs and amenities that are close at hand. The "Village" will feature walking and bike trails and less dependence on travel by car is being touted as a benefit. There will be condos, as well as assisted living and a long term care units as part of the mix. New jobs will be created and overall this will be good for the Okatie community. There is in this area pressure on home prices, no question. However, investors see potential and they see opportunity. Ken Simonson, chief economist for The Associated General Contractors of America said: "Single-family building costs have been held down by falling prices for lumber and plywood, but these materials make up an insignificant part of the cost of other types of construction. "Simonson noted major materials price increases over the past 12 months including: Copper and brass mill shapes, such as pipe, wiring, faucets, and flashing, up 88 percent Wallboard and other gypsum products, 23 percent, Plastic construction products like polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, fittings, and membranes, 20 percent, Steel mill products, 18 percent, Aluminum mill shapes, 15 percent, Concrete products, 11 percent (Source HGTVPRO.COM) Build now, or pay more for materials, later. The only question is, will the buyers come and will they be able to buy.

In Sun City, about 2/3rds of the residents are retired. But, I gotta tell ya, they are not sitin' home watchin' the tube and eatin' Twinkies: They are OUT having FUN.

Sun City does have a number of people who are also single. There are ways for singles to meet each other through clubs, and events. These activities offer an opportunity to go on a date without breaking the bank! Same goes for those who are married.

Broadway's Phantom of the Opera, comes to Sun City for an intimate evening of songs from the world of Broadway and Cabaret. As reported by Bluffton Today's Carl Lehman--there has been a wild pig sighting caught on camera by one of our residents. These creatures can do some damage to your lawn but there are things you can do to deter the critters--spray anti-deer spray, for one. You can also apply anti-grub spray to your lawn. The pigs feed on these and can make a mess of your lawn. No Grubs, no Pigs.

I don't want you to think we have some version of "Wild Kingdom" in Sun City. Wild life is a fact of life in the "Low Country" and Sun City. You'll see deer, alligators sunning themselves on one of our many lagoons or sometimes you can see wild turkeys in the woods. Essentially, if you let them be, they are not usually a problem.
