If you are interested, I just found out that the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and Clemson University's Research Farm Services will sponsor a youth/adult dove hunt on the opening day of mourning dove season Saturday, Sept. 4.
This is a one-time hunt, and the field will only be open for this opening-day hunt. The field is located near Pendleton in Anderson County at the Simpson Agriculture Station. I am wondering if I will be able to hear it from my house because I live pretty close as a crow flies to the place they are having the dove hunt.
For more information on the youth/adult dove hunt, call the Clemson S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) office at (864) 654-1671, extension 16, or send an e-mail to MortonR@dnr.sc.gov.
All participants must have an adult, 21 years or older, with them in order to hunt; youths must be 17 or younger. All adults will be required to have a valid state hunting license, Wildlife Management Area (WMA) permit and migratory bird permit.
One adult may bring up to two youths and will use the same stand. Only the youth will be allowed to shoot.
Make sure to get there early because this hunt will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The field is very large and can accommodate about 75-80 hunters. If more than 80 hunters arrive for the hunt, latecomers will be asked to wait until someone leaves the field before entering. And you know you would hate to NOT get to participate!
To reach the field, from Pendleton just north of the SC 187 and US 76 intersection, turn right off US 76 onto Westinghouse Road and proceed to the stop sign (about 1 mile) and turn right onto Lebanon Road and proceed 2.1 miles. Adult/youth hunt signs will be posted at that point. Access to the field will only be available from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.
To reach the field from the junction of Lebanon Road and US 178, turn onto Lebanon Road and go 3.3 miles to Simpson Agriculture Station. From there, follow dove field signs on your right.
This is a large cornfield that has been recently harvested, and the DNR is hopeful that doves will begin to quickly use this field.
All hunters must report to the field at 11:30 a.m. for a brief safety talk. The following regulations will apply:

Pendleton is located in Anderson County in Upstate South Carolina. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 2966.
The Pendleton Historic Distric was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1970. Historic buildings on the Pendleton town square include Farmer's Hall and Hunter's Store. There are some really great antique stores in Pendleton and without a doubt you should check out the historic plantation homes Ashtabula and Woodburn.
Pendleton is a wonderful town with many historic buildings and a location that is convenient to Anderson and Clemson. It is only 30 miles from Greenville making it an ideal bedroom community for people wanting to live in a quiet small town but work in a larger city.
Pendleton may be a small town but there is plenty of great events such as the Spring Jubilee and coming up this weekend is the Freedom Fest at Veterans Park. My wife and I had a great time at the Spring Jubilee this year but I am not sure about whether or not we will get to the Freedom Fest. My sister in law is coming to town for the 4th and my uncle I wrote about last week, well the funeral is tomorrow. Plus I have got plenty of irons in the fire as always with real estate.
Anyway, I hope you can check out Pendleton, and please allow time to browse the shops or grab a bite at one of the restaurants on the Square. And if you find Pendleton irresistible and want to look at homes for sale, then please visit my website to search homes for sale in Pendleton and read about the latest real estate market conditions in Pendleton SC.
