Travelers Rest, SC

As I watched my daughter graduated with her class Tuesday I sat in all as to how fast the years have flown. i watched as she learned to crawl and walk and ride a new bike. I watch in great pride through all the color guard and flag routines. Now I watch her finish one milestone and head straight into a new world of her own. She graduated with a 3.9 GPA and received 3 scholarships in Criminal Justice Forensic Science. She was told in elementary school she just didn't learn like the rest. They felt she would be better off in a special class so she could learn a career. But she was just a late bloomer, one that struggled to read and understand and was later found to have audio processing problem. Finally a diagnosis, she was given new ways to learn, home school, tutoring, then as she entered high school she wanted to give it her best, and that she did! To all those who have been told your child can't learn , maybe they just need to see how the child learns, and go with it, treat them like they are like the rest but help them learn the way God designed them to be! Turns out Brittany was a visual learner and when given the right tools and taught by how she learned and not how everyone else learns they found a very smart and intelligent child that took flight and jump all the hurdles, and graduates with honor. In the grocery store a retired spacial ed worker that once tested Brittany ask how she was doing I told her about graduation and that Brittany was headed to collage and she was thrilled and so excited for it was her that told me the secret long ago on how to fight the school system and win. She said don't back down, fight for her and never give into the system. We followed her advice and I am so glad I did, because a child with the faith and determination and support will make it and pass the rest on the way to the top! Congratulation Brittany , great job we are so proud of you and I know in my heart you will take collage by storm and once again fight your way to the top!

The Swamp Rabbit Trail is almost complete!! What the heck is that?

Every once in a while you'll tool through a small town in the south that really looks like it's sprouting new shoots and ready to bloom. After living in Travelers Rest, SC just north of Greenville for nearly 6 years..that is exactly what is happening. The economy has been slow but the businesses are coming. The locals are slow to change but realize that the change is coming too. When you get on your bike in TR (as we call it) and know that you can travel miles, unbothered by traffic and surrounded by woods, lovely Furman University and the growing burb of Travelers Rest! Check out my journal entry a few days ago.

Wow guys. We did the Swamp Rabbit Trail this morning by bike. The redo looks fantastic! The work is still in progress....landscaping being finished, but overall, it is looking great.

While walking down the street, along with two different cycling teams passing us, a vintage BMW driving club came motoring down the street several cars long. Lots of people using the New Trail as well as the redone sidewalks even with the current cool temps.

Went in Williams Hardware and if you haven't been, you HAVE to go. Like a mini, upscale version of The Mast General Store (Google it..it's a staple in the South). Great merchandise and they also have a cafe....open for lunch every day and dinner on weekends. Great food, wine tastings on certain nights, cool place.

I also noticed for the first time how the Swamp Rabbit Trail runs immediately behind so many commercial buildings....watch for some future restaurants with decks on the back....simply step of the greenway and have lunch or a drink.

With the demographics of Furman, Paris Mountain and Mountain Park / Cliffs, watch this area boom.

Oh, also, the last leg of the Swamp Rabbit Trail between downtown and TR is suppose to open this spring with a big kickoff run.

These pictures don't do it justice....go check it out in person....you'll be impressed. From a 5 lane highway to a quaint village area. Impressive.

To grow you must do it correctly the city of Travelers Rest has been hard at work this winter and the changes are awesome. The walking trail is beautiful. They have created with a lot of thought and plans a safe and beautiful place to park and walk and work. Downtown has been revived with a new design. The downtown area has taken on a park like setting. There are opportunities to get involved with store front buildings, which are zoned multi-use. You can have apartments over the shops! New restaurants and shops are popping up along the main street area. Main Street is designed for a slower pace where you can park and walk and enjoy the area. The 25 area is building up with shopping center type construction, so the best of both worlds are available to the residents of Travelers Rest.
