As you are surfing the internet looking at aerial views have you pondered what those long rectangular "mirrors" may be on the ground that are in rural areas of the country in the mid south and eastern part of the United States? The answer - in this case - is chicken houses! Usually they are in groups of 2. In this example there are 6 of them. Depending upon the topography they may be very close to your home and you will not even know it - until the manure is removed.
Each of these houses contains approximately 40,000 chickens. In this picture this equates to about 240,000 of them that may be your neighbors - if you happen to live "next door". In most instances you will get a flock of new neighbors about every 40 to 55 days. At that time both the chickens and the manure are removed.
The chickens are almost always grown by the land owner, under contract, for one of the 3 major poultry processors in the United States. The land owner also owns the building and other infrastructure associated with the operation. The contractor determines how long they are fed, when they are removed and when a new flock arrives.
In most instances, chicken farms are required to obtain an NPDES permit from the EPA or the EPA equivalent in state in which they operate. This permit regulates the disposal of the manure, any deceased animals and the overall operation of the farm.
So, now as you are "surfing" the maps on the internet, you will know what some of those rectangular mirrors are that are staring back at you - chicken houses!

The stories I hear from people that bought a house without investigating the neighborhood first are too numerous. The internet can be misleading and cannot replace the local insight of a professional real estate agent. As you choose your real estate agent, make sure that you are not just going to be a number. A real estate agent should be able to provide you with a personal service, accurate information, local insight and sincere advice. There is much that you cannot read about on the internet regarding a neighborhood or a location and many times the information would be out of date. Some websites that claims to provide information about neighborhoods in Cookeville were still calling Tennessee Tech University, Tennessee Polytechnical Institute. A name that changed decades ago. This just proved to me further the need for a reliable and current source of information and the relevance of the role realtors do in home buying and selling. If this is how much that they can provide about an institution that has a national and regional reputation, how much do they really know about a neighborhood that has just started or has been there for few years.
As you consider buying a home without the help of a competent realtor, ask yourself this question: Do I have all the information that I really need to know that what appears to be "a good deal" really is " a good deal"?

Relocating to Cookeville Tennessee was one of the best moves that my family has made. We have lived here for over 12 years, I am raising my children in this area, educating them in schools in putnam county so I know a lot about why moving to Cookeville, TN could be a great move for anyone considering relocating. When we first came Cookeville was voted second most affordable city in the US and it remains a very affordable place to live. Affordability alone would not make a place liveable if it was not for the great services available in Cookeville and Putnam county in general.
A great source of PRIDE for all of us residents of Cookeville is that Cookeville is the Home of Tennessee Tech University. TTU is one of the best schools in the southeast as selected by Princeton Review for the past 6 years. Having Tennessee Tech not only offer stability in the real estate market in Cookeville because of the stability of jobs, it enriches the culturual environment with events all year round. These events vary from free symphonies, college football and basketball games to international events such as India nights and Windows on the World. This week is the start of the TECH PRIDE period and I am very proud of all my connections to Tennessee Tech and the role TTU plays in making Putnam county a great place to live in middle Tennessee. Go TECH!!!
