I grew up on a farm in Holston Valley and I would grow sweet corn, canteloups and water mellons. I would load my truck up everyday and then drive through the camp grounds that are located around South Holston Lake. It wouldn't take long to sell out! My family also supplied most of the local markets and grocery stores with apples....I will never forget sitting under the trees or in the barm shinning apples for hours before taking them to town! So I guess you could say that I learned at a very young age to eat healthier!

• Locally grown foods do not have to be transported nearly as far as conventionally-produced food (which averages 1,500 miles) using a lot less gas and other fuels in transportation and gets to our table a lot fresher and has better flavor.
• Local farmers markets allow and help farming families to keep their farmland from big development interest amd helps farmers get a fair price for the goods they sell.
• Local farmers use methods to help reduce erosion, prevent contamination of the food they grow and the local water systems, and they are always finding ways to conserve such as natural pest control, compost and cover crops.
• When you go and buy from the local farmers markets you can ask them right on the spot any question you have about the product and you will eat healthier!

• When you but locally you decrease our dependency on the big production chains and remember you will always eat healthier.

Different crops are available at different times of the year and depend a lot on the local weather. Like for example ....at this time (November) we are able to get apples, bokchoy, broccoli, cabbage, chinese cabbage, gourds, greens, herbs, Indian corn, kale, mushrooms, mustard, pecans.  And as you can see all of these will help us eat healthier.

Remember that Bristol is a great place to live and a great place for farmers to raise their crops and most of the cities have their own farmers market....Bristol's is on State Street......just ask around and you will find one close to you so you can eat healthier from now on!

We came home yesterday (November 14) to find our annual Boy Scouts of America......Scouting for Food bag on the front door knob. This is the Scouts way of helping out all those that are in need of food in our community!

 

I have a special place in my heart for the Boy Scouts. I grew up in Scouting and received my Eagle Scout award back in the 70's and still feel honored to have had the opportunity to participate in this great program.

Here's a quick Boy Scouts fact.....

As part of the alumni.....179 U.S. astronauts were involved in Scouting...39 are Eagle Scouts....I guess you could say.....The skies the limit when you are involved in Scouting!

We were taught at a young age in Boy Scouts to be...

Friendly,

Courteous,

Kind,

Obedient,

Cheerful,

Thrifty,

Brave,

Clean,

and Reverent!

WOW!......Kind of sounds like what we have to be to be successful in Real Estate doesn't it?

I want to share with you a just a short story about South Holston Lake. You see I grew up on a farm just a couple minutes away from this awesom lake. I have a special tie to it because my grandmother grew up where the lake is now. She would sit and tell us a short story every now and then about what it was like growing up on the river and what it was like when TVA built the Dam and took all the homes that were where the lake is now.

That must have really been something!

As I grew up we spent a lot of time boating, swimming and fishing is this beautiful Lake, we would hike over the knobs and find our favorite fishing hole and stay all day and one of our favorite spots is a place called cliff Island...you can climb up and then jump off! It's not so bad when the water is up ....but when the level is down it can be quite a fall!

But it is a lot of fun!

Getting to the lake for this short story is with a view to die for as you can see below!

This is the route you take from Bristol and is only a short story drive to get there!

First of all I want to remind you that Bristol is the birthplace of Country Music....and is a really neat place to live...State Street actually separates Bristol Tn-Va and there is always something going on downtown!

Now ...Lets get started with one of our Area Attractions. Recently we visited a really neat place that's a scenic 45 minute drive away located just outside of Abingdon, Va

Backbone Rock!

This is a great place to hike and picnic and is located in the Cherokee National Forest. Trains used to travel through this Area Attraction...you can see where they had to chisel up into the rock to make sure the smoke stack would clear as it traveled through the rock!

You can even hike up to the top of the Backbone Rock and walk across the top and walk down the other side!

On the other side as you walk down you will love the views of the flowing river!

This is truly one of those Area Attractions that you will want to visit when you are in the area!

It's a great place to visit no matter what the season or what the weather!

The Tavern is an Area Restaurant which is located at 222 East Main Street, in historic Abingdon, Va. and is just minutes away from Bristol Tn. Upon entering this historic establishment which was built in 1779, you feel as if you are stepping back in history. The building was originally used as a tavern and overnight inn for stagecoach travelers. Among its most prominent guests were President Andrew Jackson, Louis Philippe, King of France and Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the designer of Washington D.C.

The atmosphere is idyllic for a romantic dinner for two or a dinner party with friends. Dining beside the fireplace on the upper level is a cozy experience or you could dine outside in a beautifully landscaped courtyard which is accented with romantic outdoor lighting. A glass of wine from its impressive wine list compliments any meal which is made by hand at the time of the order.

The Tavern is a must dining experience. The quality food is to be savored and enjoyed, while the atmosphere is very quaint and definately something to be remembered!
