Walden on Lake Houston is having its Community Garage Sale tomorrow, Saturday, October 24. This community-wide event always brings out the shoppers! It's a great way for residents of Walden on Lake Houston to have traffic driven to their garage sales by community advertising.

I have a friend who is an expert on how to set up a garage sale. So, anytime I wanted to participate in the Walden on Lake Houston Community Garage Sale - I called Sue for assistance! She would come over and set up the sale with me. Here are her rules:

• Departments. Categorize everything for sale. Kitchen, clothing, jewelry, toys, books & 8-Tracks (LOL-I guess that would be music). You get the idea. This makes your garage sale shopper-friendly.
• Payment. Wear a fanny pack for your cash. Don't use a cash box that could go missing if it's busy and you turn your back. Not that it would happen but I'm just saying.
• Security. Don't let strangers in your house. Every year someone would inevitably ask if they could use the bathroom. I let them a few times (sucker for kids) but it made me a bit nervous each time.
• Workers. Enlist your husband to help. Guys are great negotiators. They are willing to wring that extra 25 cents right out of that 10-year-old's hand. (not-so-much a sucker for kids) Plus when he says later that he can't believe you sold your Dooney-Bourke handbag for $4.35, you can come right back with "What about your attempt to sell the cat? What was that about?"

I have another friend whose husband wanted to hold the garage sale. She told him to go for it. She wasn't going to get involved. A few weeks after the sale, he decided to take over cutting the lawn from the service they had been using. My friend asked, "Are you going to use the weed-whacker for the entire lawn? Because you sold your lawn mower in the garage sale." Oh.

This morning began by checking in with Active Rain to see what interesting blogs I could enjoy over my cup of Pumpkin Spice coffee, when I came across this post.

Wilson Hill - Worthington Names / Maureen McCabe

I commented on the rich history of Worthington and the use of settler's names being tied in to the street names. That got me thinking about the street names in some communities today. Not so rich in history. In fact, some are almost humorous in their conglomeration of street names. Or the flip side of that, where there are just more names than streets available, so streets just change names for no apparent reason. Both of these situations exist in Walden on Lake Houston in Atascocita.

Our community has several "villages" within it. Here are a few to ponder.

Sportsman's Village. Sporting street names are here like Sailfish Cove or Polo Meadow. However Polo Meadow turns into Silver Lure which turns into Aquatic. Confusing, yes. If you are walking in the neighborhood, drivers are always stopping to ask, "How do I get out of here?" Plus with the last change, we have gone into another village.

Trophy Village. Racquet Sports Way and Set Point, I see a tennis theme but then Shady Ace is thrown into the mix. Is that a questionable serve?

Champion's Village. You'll see Silver Yacht and Skippers Helm. Fitting. After all, if you were a champion you might be the skipper of a silver yacht. But what about Rusty Anchor? That doesn't sound like something a champion would use or desire.

Marathon Village. Leisure Place and Tranquility Drive - these are obviously terms for after surviving the marathon. Here comes the odd name - Whirlaway Elm. Huh? Perhaps on a runner's high one sees dancing trees.

The Most Name-Changes in a Street Award goes to Olympic Village. Cross Country-Vantage View-Hikers Trail-Relay Rd-Baton Pass. My thought is that a stray marathon village runner began his cross country run, had a view of the lake, decided to hike instead, called for backup and passed that baton.

Here is my disclaimer. If I've disparaged someone's street name - I'm sorry - it was all in jest!
