The Canyon Creek Elementary PTA is again sponsoring "The One World Challenge!" Each year, the Environmental Awareness committee highights a current environmental or conservation issue for students to utilize their creativity and offers the challenge to all students attending CCE School.

Water conversation is increasingly becoming an important concern. According to the statistics, 36 states are anticipating water shortages by 2013 and Texas is one of them. Whether this is due to population growth, availability of water or environmental concerns, water conservation is becoming a major focal point. The current drought has simply intensified that effort.

Students are invited to create a solution and use their imagination to address the protection and conservation of our water resources. Solutions may be submitted in any of the following three formats:

Visual - Open to all grade divisions (K-5)
Essay - Open to Intermediate (3-5) grade divisions
Public Service Announcement - Open to Intermediate (3-5) grade divisions

Hooked on Books ~ Canyon Creek Elementary ~ NW Austin 2012

Sharon Whisnand, Librarian and Cathleen Smith, the Library Enrichment Coordinator at Canyon Creek Elementary in RRISD have got the students stirred up about the "Six Flags to Succeed" program that is going on. Each student can receive one free admission ticket to Six Flags when they complete 6 hours of reading. Who doesn't want to go to Six Flags!!

There will be additional rewards this year for the first two classes with 100% participation. The first place class will receive a trophy, lunch time in the library and their pictures in the year book! An extra recess will be given to the second class winner.

Students need to bring completed and signed forms to the library and a "fish" with the students name on it will be placed in the pond in the main hallway. All forms must be submitted by Friday, February 24th, 2012! Any questions call Sharon or Cathleen at the Library: 512-428-2815.

NW Austin ~ Canyon Creek Elementary "Pay It Forward" Week

I love the concept of "Pay It Forward" which is the philosophy of doing a good deed for someone else in hopes that the receiver will one day do a good deed for someone else.

Canyon Creek Elementary is dedicating a week February 27 - March 2nd, 2012 as "Pay It Forward" Week! Students, teachers and staff working together will pay it forward this year by assembling 50 take home bags for the parents of children that are born premature. They will be donating these bags to "A Hand to Hold Organization".

Canyon Creek community can make a difference by donating items in order to fill these bags. There will be bins in the hallway below the stairs to place the donations. Items needed are:


* Diapers * Cloth diapers
* Board books * Baby rattles/developmental toys
* Receiving blankets * Hand sanitizer
* Kind bars * Starbucks cards
* Desitine ointment * Onesies (plain white preemie or newborn size)

They are also searching for more volunteers after March 2nd to help assemble the bags. Please contact Denise Haverda at dhaverda@yahoo.com if you have any questions or can offer assistance. Let's all make sure this project Pay It Forward is a success!

RRISD ~ NW Austin, Texas ~ Canyon Creek residents ~ Calling all Kindergartners for 2012-2013!

If you have a little one ready to start kindergarten in the Round Rock School District in the fall of 2012 don't forget to mark you calendars for registration the week of March 5-9, 2012.

Round Rock ISD Kindergarten Roundup

Any child who will be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2012 and who lives in the Round Rock ISD is eligible to attend the districts full day kindergarten. If you have a child who is eligible, please go to your neighborhood elementary school anytime between 9am and 2pm on March 6 to register.

Canyon Creek residents be sure to register your students!

What Parents should bring to registration on March 6:

• Proof of residence within the district (contract on house, lease agreement, actual title to house or current RRISD tax statement)

• Child's official birth certificate

• Child's immunization record (see requirements)

• Child's social security card (preferred but will not prevent enrollment)

You should come to registration even if you do not have all of the above information.

Parents will be given notice of when these items are due.

Requirements for immunizations your child needs:

Your child will not be admitted to school unless (s)he has had immunizations for:

• DTP series - five doses, unless the fourth dose was received on or after the 4th birthday in which case only four doses are required.

• Polio - four doses, one of which must have been received on or after the 4th birthday. Or, if the third dose was administered on or after the 4th birthday only three doses are required. If any combination of four doses of OPV and IPV was received before four years of age no additional dose is required.

• Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - two doses of measles, mumps, rubella containing vaccine are required. The first dose must be administered on or after the 1st birthday and the second dose must be administered before entry into kindergarten.

• Hepatitis B - three doses of Hepatitis B are required.

• Hepatitis A - two doses

• Varicella - two doses of varicella vaccine received on or after the 1st birthday (if the child has NOT had chickenpox)

Some of the immunizations require three doses a few months apart; therefore, we advise you to begin them early and complete them in mid-August. Contact your family doctor or county health office for the immunizations. Immunization requirements may change so check the immunization website for updates.

Spring is just around the corner for us in Texas. In fact, this year like many places, it has come a little early (hope we don't end up with a surprise storm).

Canyon Creek Elementary is calling for help for Green Day! It's March 3, 2012 from 8:30 am-12 noon. Get your gardening tools out, your gloves on and come help ready our community school for beautiful spring weather! There will be weeding, trimming, planting and mulching so lots of helping hands are needed. Remember it takes a village to raise our children and keeping up their daily environment is important.

If you can't commit to the whole time that is no problem! One hour of your time would be most appreciated! This is also a great way to earn volunteer hours for middle and high school students. Let's all mark our calendars and make this annual event the best turnout ever!
There will be plenty of donuts and OJ for all the hard workers.
