You will never have to pay to be listed as a top neighbor. Period. That important detail clarified, let's discuss how we arrive at two "top neighbors" for a given region:
Localism is a bustling collection of hyper-local communities, and the top neighbors should reflect those members who are most active. When ranking users in a given region, several factors are considered. To get your foot in the proverbial door, you need to have posted at least one "Localism" article or photo for the region.
The very best way to quickly rise to #1 is to post high-quality local content. Keeping a steady strem of incoming posts and photos will massively tilt the scales in your favor.
What doesn't count toward the top neighbor ranking? ActiveRain points and community sponsorships. The top neighbor spots will always go to the most active members in a region. We want to create a level playing field that encourages the growth of communities — talent and dedication are required to win the day.
There are a few things that say Austin in the summer. Swimming at Barton Springs, sunsets over Lake Travis, and the Paramount Annual Film Series. The Paramount kicks of its 36th Annual Film Series with a film fan meet and greet with Peter Bogdanevich. Bogdanovich directed Paper Moon and Mask, but is best known for one of his earliest works, Texas classic The Last Picture Show. More recently, Bogdanovich has gained a new audience, by playing a psychiatrist to a psychiatrist in the modern classic television show, The Sopranos.
The Paramount will show more than 80 classic films this summer. Casablanca will be shown on the 20th, with Mr. Bogdanovich offering his commentary and discussing Hollywood history. The admission is free for film members.
It's been thirty three years and running. The Old Pecan Street Festival is an Austin institution. On May 7th the Pecan Street Festival will take place on world famous 6th Street from 11 am - 10 pm. On Sundays May 8th, the festival will resume from 11am - 8 pm.
Eyeores Birthday 2011 will take its annual place in Pease Park in downtown Austin on the last Saturday in April. In a city that is losing many of its beloved traditions, Eyeores Birthday is one of the few Austin institutions that isn't going away. Eyeores Birthday is an all day, outdoor festival, that celebrates the character Eyeore of Winnie The Pooh with music, food and drink that benefits local non-profits. Many attendees wear costumes, while some choose to wear, well, not much.
Austin's population has exploded over the last twenty years. But Eyeore's is a bit of a reunion for old Austinites, and a peak at a city from years gone by, for new residents. Aquafest is gone, South By Southwest has gone from a festival to a national event, but Eyeores Birthday still is Eyeores. People bring dogs, some bring their children, others play games (the biggest egg toss you'll ever see), many participate in the infamous drum circles, and some of us just watch all the activity. All this takes place, on what is arguably the best weather day of the year in our fair city. Spring has set in, and the dog days of summer are several week away.
The day begins at 11 am, and the bands began at 12. This years lineup include The Bandulus, Scorpio Rising, The Johnson Brothers and Rattletree. Eyeores is still free. And the party goes until dark. In a city that seemingly changes by the minute, Eyeores Birthday Party is truly a one of a kind Austin event.
In conjunction with University of Texas Athletics, the city of Austin, and various local business, the Urban Life Group has scheduled the 6th annual Urban Music Festival during Texas Relays Weekend. The Texas Relays is one of the oldest and most prestigious track and field events in the country. The Texas Relays celebrates it 84th anniversary, with such luminaries as Carl Lewis, John Wesley Jones, and many other Olympians participating.
The Relays, with attendance of 60,000 is the second largest track and field event in the country, only trailing the Penn Relays. The explosion of visitors to the Austin area for the last twenty years, led to the creation of the Urban Music Festival. The festival is a collection of music, food, and games for children.
This years lineup of music includes Jay Lamont and Charlie Wilson. Prices are $25 for general admission, $5 for children 7-12 and free for those 6 and under.
